Can anyone suggest either a good book or website that explains all about dog showing such as the process, do's and dont's, show terms etc. preferably in simple words.
Ive been looking at some dogs show records and im getting confused with all the letters, i get ones like BOB = Best Of Breed, BIS = Best In Show but no clue what AVNSC is (i assume AV is Any Varity right?)

I do plan to go along to ringcraft classes and to open and champ shows with my mate but i want to do some research befor hand as it takes a while for things to sink in some times with me.

There's a fair bit on the KC website.http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/activities/exhibiting.html
AVNSC= Any Variety Not Separately Classified.

Im new too, I read books etc and unfortunately do not have the luxury of ringcraft anywhere near where I live. I too like to be fully prepared so purchased a couple of breed specific books to learn from but to be honest, nothing will learn you more than experience first hand.

I found the only way to learn is to get to a breed show and see how people show dogs of your breed. Its amazing how many really nice people you will meet who will help you as much as they can. Jump in, you will love it!

Good Luck!! :)

Go to shows with your breed scheduled before jumping in and talk to people, maybe even go along to the ringcraft club and watch.  If you have another dog, take them along and have a go.  I've known many people train with a crossbreed or non show quality dog before getting their potential show pup, when they get the pup they have a clue of hohw it's done and can practise from getting home rather then waiting.  Something that makes all the difference.

The reason so many experianced people come out with well behaved trained dogs because they start from the word go.

im going to the Welsh Kennel Club Champ Show next month to meet the breeder and here dogs (they are in england so as they are up they have invited my to meet up with them) i have the kennel club breed book but it doesnt say much about showing. ive got pleanty of time though as the litter is planned for the end of next year and im not going to be a serious shower or anything more for fun but i would love to show at crufts though.

When I said jump in I mean into the shows without the dog initially, meet experienced people in your breed who will be able to give you sound advice and guide you to the point that you want to enter. Its great fun, especially if you have some degree of success!! Just have fun :)

This is a great way to start.  If the breeder knows you are interested she will be able to give you lots of advice and introductions.  One of the best ways to learn is to watch the entire breed class with someone on hand to explain what the judge is doing and who is being placed where.  You'll see how your chosen breed is presented and moved.  When I first started, quite recently, I found it very useful to have people to explain what just happened and what I was supposed to do next!!

You can get some good information on CD to specific questions but I also found these books helpful:

Showing Dogs: The Exhibitors' Guide, Good Showing: The New Exhibitor's Guide to Dog Showing and the Showring, and Dog Showing: From Beginners to Winners.   You may find them in your local library.  Good luck with your research :)

All I can add to the excellent advice already given is stick to publications and websites aimed at the UK exhibitor.
US showing is rather different as is European and Australian..time to find out about that later I would think.
