For black and white dogs.:)

It depends on what you want the coat to be like eg. soft, harsh, straight, curly. If our bernese are just getting a bath because they need it I just use whatever dog shampoo I have around all over but if they are getting a bath for a show I use one shampoo for the white bits and another shampoo for the black and tan bits and then finish off with conditioner on black bits to give a nice shine.

We used 'wash and go' on our Swedish lapphund (black) and his coat was always fab :-D
Haven't used any specifically for white on the dogs but i have used white shampoo on my daughter's horse's white feathers and it really brought out the white and made it sparkle - the trick with white seems to be to wash twice. Actually I may use some of it on my bernese who is currently black, tan and grey
Thanks for the replies.
I looked on one website for dog shampoo, and for black dogs it says it promotes intense colour, and for white dogs it says the same.
Has anyone ever used these shampoo's & does it change their colour?
40 years ago i had a black poodle, when she was old & grey & after being at the dog groomers she went from grey to black because of the shampoo they used, i dont want a shampoo like that because i would consider that to be cheating.

www.dezynadog.co.uk I use wahl diamond white for the whites (its a purple colour) and copper for the browns but they do a black one. I also use cowboy magic conditioner (rosewater ) brill
Doreen Paige does shampoos for colour too which I also use, I buy the caramel but they also do one for black and white.

I think the ones that say they intensify the colour do just that - they don't change the colour, not a dye as such. How much they work on black or brown is debatable but the white one (very blue shampoo) certainly brightened the horse's white feathers more than standard shampoo's. E-mail them and see if they will send a sample as they generally aren't cheap.

Groomers evening primrose oil is usually good, they do it in black and white, but if you want really really sparkling white bits use JDS insecticidal shampoo mixed with a little bit of original fairy liquid (it has to be the original stuff) and your will get the most amazing clean white sparkling hair :) :) :) I never used anything else on my white poodles and everyone used to ask me how I got them so white. Dakkobear you should always wash your dog twice :), first wash gets most of the dirt off and the second wash gets the dog really clean and sparkling
Does that mix of shampoo and fairy liquid make the coat soft? I have white terriers who dont stay white that long but obviously need to keep a harsh coat.
Thank

No if anything it dries it out and keeps the harshness (you want a harsh coat on a poodle too :) ) but I would only recommend that you use it for shows because it is so drying on the coat, if you want to use it in between shows use a good conditioner afterwards to keep the coat from breaking but don't use the conditioner for shows
Thanks I'll give it a try next time.

we do for the dogs (well oh does :-D ) but not the horse usually!
have to recommend doreen paige products - they are 100% natural and such a fantastic selection for all colours and coat types - you can contact the owner valerie and get stuff by mail order - the website is www.doreenpaige.com.
You have all been very helpful so far, but what shampoo would you use for harsh coats for terriers, & also long haired dogs.

I use "Winners Circle" hard coat shampoo for my terrier's legs (the only bit of her I wash) and it keeps the hair nice and crisp in texture. I only wash her legs before a show though, in between if she's really muddy I just use the hosepipe on her legs!
What shampoo would you use for dalmatians and yorkshire terriers. Sorry for being such a pain, but i want to get it right when i bath these dogs, as my brother and mum have these breeds.

Dalmatians have a very sensitive skin so only use the very mildest shampoo, and as infrequently as possible - once a year should be plenty often enough.
Can you reccomend one Jeangenie.

Baby shampoo is fairly safe and reliable.

we have had good results with white on white, just with dallys coats be carefull or you could start off dally rash ( i use a pre wash of hibi scub which seems to help stop any dreaded dally rash)

Pssst.....

I have been using
'Quistel' and find that my Husky's white areas are much more gleaming than usual.
(Coops this may be something for you to look at as 'Quistel' is a kinder alternative to Hibi-scrub use)
Highly recommend it :)

Thanks for both, changed now lol, Will have a look at that stuff and may well give it a try as i have used hibi, coatx and malaseb and all have worked well at preventing any rash so far. But she does get a lot of showers/ swimming ( not helped with a enjoyment of mud) so something more gental would be better

If a dal's coat isn't washed too often it will become mud-repellent; leave the mud to dry and it'll brush off leaving no trace. Much healthier for the coat and skin.

For Yorkies I use almond shampoo as they have a silky coat, I got it from the Animal Health Co I think.
Has anyone ever used a dog shampoo on a cat?
I have just been told no i cannt. Thanks everyone. :)
