My dog has 3 ticks on her, whats the best way of getting rid of them?
- By marion [gb] Date 05.07.09 21:20 UTC
The safest & most successful method I know is to put a thumbnail sized blob of vaselin totally covering the tick, leave for about 10/15 mins and then wipe away with a tissue, the tick will have suffocated & can be removed without leaving any part behind. Tweezering often leaves the head under the skin & can cause infection.
I hope this helps you.

Can I just add that, if using a tick remover - don't forget to unscrew them anticlockwise

You shouldn't use vaseline or any other substance as it can cause the tick to regurgitate into the dog. The safest way to remove them is to use a tick remover.

Have you got it out? We used tweezers & vodka to sterilize the area, give it a good pull & check the tick when it's been removed to see if the head is still is tact.  I don't think the ones that were on Molly had been there very long so they were pretty easy to remove.

I use a tick twister - there's nothing on the packet that says it matters which way you twist, what's the logic behind that?
