Has anybody got any ideas my 15 months old aussie stands lovely in the ring now but when the judge goes over him he dosen't want to stand still.  I go training every week and he is slightly better at training.

Is it due to nervousness or excitement?

I rarely can get some of mine to stand still LOL ;) !!!, especially my Jozi who at 9 1/2 has 10CC's, definitely excitement in my dogs case, especially now that Jozi gets to go to fewer shows, she is worse than ever as she gets so excited when she is the 'chosen one'.

Personally I have found they are worse if you get worked up about it, so the trick is to keep yourself and them very calm, keep talking to the dog in a droning/calming tone and repeating the command, stand stand stand, and only treat when they do so.

Excitement he loves everybody and he can't wait to get into the ring.  It is making it hard for the judge to assess his body structure and I know sometimes he loose out because of it.

My girl will stand fine most of the time, but she has a way of looking at the judge that seems to make the judges say, hello puppy. And that's it. Wiggle wiggle and jumping up for a hug lol.  :)

Must be a breed or family trait, as when anyone focuses full attention on any of mine they think it is time for their admirer to make a big fuss of them and to whisper breathy sweet nothings straight in the judges ear

I wouldnt be too worried if he is excited - he is still a youngster after all.

In my experience dogs are normally better in a training environment than at a show because it is a familiar environment and they get to know what is expected of them, where as shows are all in different places so takes a lot longer for them to learn what is expected of them.

I have an aussie who is coming up to 2 and she doesnt stand still in the ring - shes not bad going over but in the line up she just has the fidgets and cant stay still for more than 2 seconds, Im not concerned as I know in time it will improve. At the end of the day mine has only really really been lightly shown (only done 1 champ show this year and not likley to be doing any others) so it is still novel to her. 

On the other hand my other breed also wont stand still and I have one coming up 3 who still cant keep all 4 feet on the ground whilst moving and I like it that way!

The best way I have found is to distract them whilst the judge is going over them usually giving them the chance to nibble on a titbit which takes their mind of the judge going over them - can take a while to get the right level of food for each dog so there not straining forward but when its right the dog will rarley move.

Have you tried doing it by clicker training.  My youngest Spanish wouldn't stand still at all and everyone used to laugh at her madness.  One day I thought I'd try her with a clicker and never looked back, even people in my breed stopped me at a champ show and asked if I clicker trained her, she's just so rock solid now.

Hopefully when I'm able to walk I'm going to clicker train her to move as well as she's still mental when on the move.  Other tricks that people have mentioned haven't worked so I'm hoping clicker training will help on this too.

Thanks for the advice will try different tipbit but he used to mug me for food so been reluctant to use anything to tasty. Clicker training I might try that up the club.

It will take a bit of playing around to get the right level of food - I know for my aussie that somthing like schmackos is about right althouhg can get away with using just her normal dried food, where as my flatcoats need somthing a lot more interesting to keep the attention.
