My pup is about  5 weeks post first season now. She has had some mammary developement almost since her season finished. when I asked about it on here people suggested a phantom.  I have noticed in the last few days she has a discharge. I have seen it said that a discharge is likely in a pregnant bitch, but does it happen in a phantom too? I can't see that she is pregnant as the only male dog she has had any contact with has had the supralorin implant  3 months before her season and in any case is so much bigger than her as to make mating impossible. They were never left alone together anyway.

A Bitch certainly can lactate in a phantom. Try not to keep expressing tho as this will keep the milk there. It should dry up on its own accord. I have a Bitch that has a phantom after every season but has never has a serious one however this one as all 3 bitches were in season at the same time she's had quite a bad phantom. So i went to the vets for galastop which helps dry up the milk and stop the hormones that makes her think she's going to have puppies.

I'm assuming the discharge is from her vulva? If so I'd be concerned about a possible pyo and would like the vet to check her out. Have you taken her temperature?

Yes, its from her vulva. I bought a thermometer the other day so will take it now.

Thanks

Anything between 37.5 and 39, so she's not running a temprature. :-)

she doesn't seem ill, has just been on a long walk and is now scoffing her breakfast. Will just keep an eye on her. I hadn't thought about Pymetra, At least I now know to watch for it.
