im looking to breed my girl at the end of july
ive got a few studs in mind that have been tested,
im hoping to have the lighter shades of colours.
my girl has had puppies before and she had black and a brown.
ive got a apricot boy that i do like his parents were both dark apricot,
and by the sound in names in his pedigree he has red, apricot and cream, in there too
do anyone know about the genes with colours and is there a chance she will have the lighter shade with him.
her parents were black and brown,
im confused with all the colours now,
who decides on the colour of pups is it the mum,dad or both?
im hoping to keep a pup out of this litter too.
if anyone can give me any advice that would be great
and thanks in advance. donna
her colour is cream

To be honest as you don't actually know these dogs, I'd be more concerned about their quality and health than their colour.  There's no point in producing a pup of the right colour if it's got a poor coat or a body as long as a Dachshund! :)

Colour depends on the genes of both dog and bitch. You need to research properly the dogs in the pedigrees, not just go by their names. Contact their breeders to find out what colour they were. Your breed club will be able to help you there.

But of far more importance than colour is health - has your bitch passed all the breed-relevant tests for genetic conditions?

Just because a dog has a certain name doesn't necessarily mean it is that colour  ;-) My last litter had a colour theme, but they are all black and white :-)

You would be better talking to someone in yuor breed who understands how colours can come through. My breed should be black and white, but we ocassionally get brown and white or tri colours coming through from said black and white parents. You need to know which colours are dominant, and someone in your breed with the knowledge is really the way to go.

Your bitch is cream (but with black and brown parents) this is the main disadvantage, but as this is the bitch that you are to breed from then your best bet is to try and find a male with as much light colouring in his line as possible, hopefully with no black which is the most dominant colour and throw back.

The male you mention is apricot with dark apricot parents so I would say if you are trying to get a cream/apricot he would be your best bet. :-) You may get the odd dark pup but you should get mainly cream and apricot in the litter. I agree that names can be misleading, so try to contact the potential sires breeder to clarify, but to be honest your bitch has black and brown parents so she is the weak link here colour wise, if you mated her with a black male previously it is understandable why all her pups were black and brown.

thanks for that info carrington that is really helpful.
so its best to stick with a boy stud that both parents are the lighter shade.
