hi stacey, this is my first staff but not my first dog i've sort of grown up with them,!!. do you know anything about showing dogs, where to start, if you find one can you take your dog along to compare??...scoob's x
By scooby
Date 24.11.02 01:01 UTC
not to show !!!!!!!!!! just compare??

That is what showing is, having your dog compared against the others and the standard.

the dog papers i've heard of them!! may have to order??
By Kash

I've just started myself really with German Shepherds:) But my breeder put me onto the National GSD mag- monthly- which lists the show dates coming:) She also put me onto a 'ringcraft' training club. Most of the German Shepherd Clubs have their own websites- maybe try typing them in for Staffies see what it comes up with? As for the dog papers- you will have to order them at your newsagents- you can get Dog World and another one- I can't remember the name of this one at the minute- I only get the Dog World- it costs £1.60 for this but it has breed notes etc in there for each breed- I think you should do a search on here and see what the other one's called? But it's a start for you isn't it:) There's also lots of tel no's etc for each of the breeds in 'Dogs Today'- a mag out monthly- Good Luck.

I don't know- all I know is that they have one for GSD's but it's the breed council that provide this mag each month- for a subscription fee of course:)
Thanks Lynn- what are you doing up at this time:)

Yes you can just spectate- although my bitch is old enough for minor puppy at the minute- I haven't actually bit the bullet and entered her in any yet- but she is entered in one on the 15th Dec:o ;)
And I pay £3 for each mag- like I say I don't know if Staffies do this or not? Infact I don't know if any other breed does this? I'm off to bed now- I've emailed you:)

Scooby
The best person to advise you on your pup is a reputable Staffy breeder. Forgive me if you have answered this elsewhere - but did you get your staff from a reputable breeder? If you have any concerns as to the correctness of the bite - I would talk to them. A vet is not usually a breed expert. They can tell you if a dogs health is affected, ie if the bite is so bad as to affect their ability to eat, but not if your dog is a good example of the breed and therefore potentially good breeding stock.
Quality dogs worth breeding from come from quality backgrounds - but a quality background does not guarantee a quality dog - if that makes sense. For example - I know a Cocker who has an excellent pedigree - and yet you would never breed from her as she is far from a good example of the breed. All the lineage does is help ensure their are as few minor faults as possible - but it does not guarnatee it.
An incorrect bite, as has already been said, is not something that can be recitified by breeding to a perfect bite and certainly not to an overshot and no reputable breeder would breed from a dog with an incorrect bite. But if your staffy is only a puppy - many bites can and do become correct as the puppy completes its teething and growing. A bit like you see goofy kids when they get their second teeth but their faces and jaws aren't big enough for them - the majority correct as the child grows up. As with dogs though - there are those that don't.
From what I have picked up from your messages - you are not an experienced Staffy person and while you think your dog may be a good specimin, you do not have the expertise to be able to say that. We all see our dogs as wonderful - but it takes experience to say that IS a good example of the breed.
If you did get her from a reputable breeder then I would take her back to be assessed by them. I did that with my first Cocker who is the brother of the cocker I mentioned earlier. My breeder had a good look at him and agreed he was a good example and worth showing etc. I thought he was perfect anyway - but only she could tell me if he was any good.

Stacey, I'm usually up this time of night, just not on here! What about you?
I shall be thinking of you on the 15th! :)I hope it goes well for you. I'm aiming to show Abby for the first time on New Year's Day in an exemption show at Wood Green. The "judge" at ring craft says her "sit" is coming along nicely

, so I'm not expecting much;)

Your best bet is to order one or both of the canine weeklies. They have adverts for the shows, the results, and judges opinions (critiques) as well as articles of interest and breed notes.
Ask your Newsagent to order Our Dogs, or Dog World. I would suggest both for a month, and then decide which you prefer, as they differ in style.

Just got the gist of this thread, and think I know what
may have happened.
If the vet/nurse came from a mixed practice, then they evaluate sheep's teeth in a different manner to the way we do dogs' teeth (I can't remember why- something to do with sheep not having upper incisors I think)
So, undershot in a dog is overshot in a sheep, and vice-versa.
Crazy but true, and confusing to most of us !!!!!

Thanks for that Jo:) I'm far from an expert but they sounded okay to me

- I was even looking in Kassies mouth to compare and thought *if his bitch's bite's out- so's mine*:o But with it being the vet that said it was out- who am I to argue with that. But like you say- the sheep thing might be the reason:)
Thanks

Scooby, in the UK all Dog show are amateur, but I supose they range in the seriousness of the exhibitors and how much time they are prepared to put into the dog(s) they are showing. May be starting with the Exemption, then Limited (there aren't too many of those at the moment but changes the KC are trying to bring about may mean a lot more), next the Open Show these are the most common at the moment and of course the prestige Championship Shows.
Exemption shows, you can pop a lead on the dog and pop up the road to the local show, but you will not learn much about your dogs quality. You would need to attened several breed classes at Open show level to get an idea of the dogs true quality.
