Topic Dog Boards / General / Goats, anybody own them.

We have a rough grazing area about 1 acre, and I have always wanted Goats, my mum owned them when she was younger, and they escaped all the time and ate my grandfathers plants/crops, how high does the fencing need to be, I have a large shed which is waterproof with a stable door, where they can stay dry and warm, there's also some fallen tree's , which I've heard they like to climb onto.
Also what tpe of feeds/supplemets should they get??
Or is there any books which can give me more information, I would like Anglo Nubbain's??? The floppy eared ones, or the coloured ones, not the white Saanan's.

Any info most helpful, also would you buy adults or kids??

I rescued a Saanan once - brought to my door with no knowledge or experience at all.  I put it in the plum orchard and the whole lot was demolished in an hour before OH came home! :)

Dry shelter is the most important and you feed concentrate and good quality hay.  They don't eat grass but they eat anything else.  Rhodedendron is poisonous I remember, we had to keep ours fenced.  I used to walk her on a lead to browse hedges.  She'd jump in the back of the car to go out for a walk!  The height of the fence isn't as important as the ability to climb it so chain link is out if the hooves (that need filing at least once a month) fit the holes.  Likewise ranch fencing because they just use it like stairs!  We used 3 strands of wire through concrete posts - it looked flimsy but she couldn't climb it.

I loved Cassie dearly but be aware that the females call for 3 days (night and day!) every 3 weeks.  It didn't bother me but the neighours used to comment, not complain about it! :)

Try a couple of strands of electric wiring around the top of the fence. Anglo-Nubians are gorgeous, but very people orientated, so can be noisy. They are big and they give quite a lot of milk - can you use it all?

Yes, we'll certainly use the milk, I love Goats milk, so does the dogs, and I can freeze some and sell some!
Thought about electric fencing, there is a 5ft thick hedge on one side of the paddock, and the other is normal fencing, which they probably would climb through!

You can only sell it for non-human consumption unless you meet very stringent hygiene and processing regulations :(

They will eat the hedge ;)

A good A-N milker will give you over a gallon a day.

Don't forget that there are now very strict rules about moving and keeping goats. You must have a registered holding number. It's important to speak to DEFRA BEFORE you buy any goats.

As with dogs, it's best to go to the breed societies for advice and details of reputable breeders :)

Goats are wonderful, and sadly the number of owners is dropping all the time.

Thanks for all your help, did'nt realise you needed a holding nuber, do they need to be vaccianted against anything yearly, and how often would you worm them??
- By lincolnimp [gb] Date 29.06.09 14:11 UTC
Yes they need to be vaccinated against clostridia and tetanus and they should have a booster every six months. Worming is dependent on how you keep them. If they only have access to one field and you can't move them around then you should worm them every three weeks during the summer - changing wormer regularly (Panacur, Nilverm, Oramec). If you can move their grazing (splitting the field into smaller areas with electric fencing) you only need to do it in Spring and summer - the worm larvae are killed off in the winter.

Can you not walk them to graze anymore? :(  I was well know for walking a goat and 2 Rough Collies! :)

To get a holding number http://www.rpa.gov.uk/rpa/index.nsf/home or easier phone 0845 6037777  and press 3 for documents
your local DEFRA office will give you a herd number and movement licences (to move new goats to your premises)
- By lincolnimp [gb] Date 29.06.09 14:22 UTC
Technically only on your own land - unless you have a movement licence ;)

Times change. :(
