Has anyone got any advice that could help my poor ferret?
Went out last night to get my two ferrets in for a play and noticed one of them was really thin, I had to go into hospital for a couple of nights so my neighbour had been feeding them and this was the first time I'd seen them for a few days. They had plenty of food and the ferret had been fine when I last saw her and her sister is still in good condition so my boyfriend took her to the vet this morning, she thinks it's a gut infection so I've got medicine for her. I was just wandering that if it's an infection should I separate the two ferrets in case the other catches it sharing water and food? Also any suggestions on what I could try the ferret on to get a bit of weight back on her, as she's not very interested in her regular dry complete (and I don't blame her, poor thing) and she feels so frail in my hands. I'm so worried about her :(

I dont have a ferret but have been reading up on them lately and doing some research as im interested in getting one (or two)

Why not feed RAW as i hear ferrets are fond of raw meat. Also eggs which i guess may not be a good idea at the mo (with gut problems) but in the future will help to repair muscle(protein) and build up a bit.
As far as passing on the infection i dont know, but my insticts would go with giving everything the ferrets have been in contact with a good clean with disinfectant. If it is a gut infection there is every chance that the poo that has passed through the gut could be harmful to the other healthy ferret who is still coming into contact with it. I always air on the side of caution - better to be safe than sorry!

Has your ferret been wormed lately, especially if feeding raw.

They were last wormed about three months ago, the vet gave a wormer and a probiotic paste. She's looking a bit brighter today but is still dreadfully thin.

have you checked for ear mites?

Have you ever used Ferretvite?  It's a vitamin and mineral supplement that can help to build them up, and they adore it.  Hard to get hold of but there is normally some on Ebay

Can you still get ferretvite?! I used to give them that but it seemed to disappear, they have ferrettone now it's like a malty paste with similar vitamins to ferretvite. I weighed her this morning and she's put on a good few grammes and is eating her food again, so fingers crossed she'll be back to her old self soon.
Thanks everyone :)

ours always go thin in summer :( is she jill jabbed?
- By Pookin [gb] Date 30.06.09 22:48 UTC
Yes she has a jab a couple of times a year, I was told they were spayed by the woman who had them before me (she didn't realize they would smell :-s ) but the sick one still comes into season. She's coming back up to her normal weight now but none of it's muscle, you can feel the difference between her and her sis. Do you think it's better to breed or have the jill jab? The two vets at the practice I use have different ideas, one says she'd be better off having kits the other swears by the jab.
I've had them five years now and this is the first time anythings gone wrong, I hope there not getting old :(
