Topic Dog Boards / Health / Coughing to clear her throat/ retching
- By issysmum [gb] Date 22.11.02 16:50 UTC
Holly has, for the last couple of days, been coughing occasionally as if to clear her throat and sort of retching at the same time :(

It only happens about 3 or 4 times a day and with no real pattern. Could this be the dreaded KC? she's not been out for a walk for the last few days as it's been raining and she won't go out in the rain so we haven't walked her since she's been coughing.

I can't get an appointment at the vets until monday and we're supposed to be visiting the in-laws on sunday and taking Holly.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Fiona

Sounds like it, sorry. Jackie

Thanks Jackie :) I thought it probably was :( Still, it does mean I get a whole day to myself as Chris can take the kids :D :D :D :D :D

I'll call the vets and book an appointment for Monday.

Have you had a quick look to see if there's anything stuck in her mouth, to rule that out?
Does sound like Holly isn't going to be visiting anyone for a few days:(

Hi Fiona

Tell the vet's what you think it might be and they will probably come out to the car and see her rather than risk you going into the waiting room

Hope it is KC and not anything else edited: I mean that KC is one of the more innocent reasons for coughing

On your own throat press the bit just below the adams apple and just above the u shape bone....well basic anatomy! :-)

Now feel the same bit on Holly...and see if this makes her cough......always a good KC indicator if you aren't sure

If she doesn't seem too bad with it, just treat with benylin (sp?) as you have no other dogs to infect.

If you are at all unhappy take her to the vet :-)
- By issysmum [gb] Date 22.11.02 17:38 UTC
I just tried that and it hurts :( Mind you, I probably pressed too hard!!! Holly did cough when I tried it on her so it looks as if I was right.

I've spoken to the vets again and told them I thought it was KC and they're seeing her tomorrow morning - someone cancelled - and I told them that I would wait in the car with her. They were very impressed that I knew something about it, so more brownie points for me :D :D :D

I've got plenty of benylin and have given her some - that was fun :D - so hopefully she'll be a little better this evening. Thinking about it she's been very loving and clingy over the last week so she's probably not been quite right. She's been off her food a bit as well, but I soaked her food yesterday and she seemed a lot more interested.

I'll let you know how we get on tomorrow.

Thanks,

Fiona

It is unusual for the dog to be unwell with KC may be it's a throat infection which will responed to antibiotic. Hope no one thinks dogs are never ill with KC secondary infections can make a dog ill and pups & old dogs can be very badley affected, but in a health adult it is uncommon.
Jackie
- By issysmum [gb] Date 22.11.02 17:52 UTC
I don't think she's ill, in fact I'm sure of it, she's just not quite right. I don't think she's been sleeping very well because of the coughing and she's always very loving when she's tired.

I've told my MIL we're not going down as her puppy is very delicate and I don't want to infect her as well.

thanks,

Fiona

I've got them Terri :( I am so sorry about your puppies - I can't imagine how you feel.

To be honest with you it was reading your posts over the last couple of weeks that inspired me to go and read up about KC and it's symptoms. It's also because of your pups that I'm taking Holly to the vets.

I've been going 2.5mls of Benylin every four hours - does that sound about right for a 10kgs dog?

Fiona, has Holly been eating Action Man clothes again? ;-) :D
- By issysmum [gb] Date 23.11.02 20:44 UTC
Unfortunately not Leigh :( I wish she had as it would have been a lot simpler.

She collapsed this morning and was rushed to the vets barely breathing - the vets diagnosed a severe case of kennel cough that had dropped down onto her lungs. They put her on a drip and antibiotics straight away and put her on oxygen and she perked up within a few hours. The duty vet is staying with her tonight and if she continues to recover we'll get her home on Monday morning.

It's very, very quiet at home this evening :(

Dear Fiona, I am truly shocked to hear that Holly's KC has now turned into something as serious as pneumonia :-(
I do hope that she makes a full recovery and suffers none of the long term side effects that are associated with pnemonia in dogs :-( If you need any information links, please let me know. Is she insured? I do hope so, because this condition is very costly to diagnose and in many cases leads to a need for on-going treatment.

Being a young and fit dog will go in her favour :-)
Didn't Holly have KC before? I vaguely remember a post saying she had, but I could be wrong?

Fiona be positive, afterall "how do you know you can't swim, until you have drowned". I am sure Holly is a 'swimmer' and will make a full recovery :-)

Please keep us posted as to her progress and try not to worry.

fiona, so sorry to here about holly, will pray that she is soon well again, kennel cough must be rife at the moment my young boy has got it as well, my bitch had what i think was a mild dose, just sneezing and snuffles but no coughing, got her antibios and think caught it in time, i feel the boy has caught it from our local open show wich was a couple of weeks ago, think the bitch caught somthing from midland counties. regards tina

Hi i've been watching for news on Holly. How is she, i do hope she's OK. Through reading your posting i have booked my puppy in to see the Vet in the morning. I'm not sure if he has KC but he has been doing the retching/clearing throat stuff and this morning he was definately coughing. Only a few times and i've heard none since but i leapt at the phone. He is eating well and seems as perky as usual. However he too has been more loving wanting to be close to me.
Best Wishes

Budmag
- By issysmum [gb] Date 25.11.02 19:53 UTC
Hi Budmag,

Holly is a lot better - thanks for your concern :) She managed to get hold of and eat an airfreshner which caused the collapse - she had an allergic reaction to it, but having KC definitely complicated the situation.

When you get to your vets, make sure you leave your dog in the car whilst you go into reception. KC is highly contagious and can be avery, very serious illness in old dogs and young puppies. If there are other dogs in the reception it's likely the vet will come out to the car to see your pup.

If your vet prescribes anti-biotics be aware that they can cause diahhrroea and they killo ff all the bacteria in the stomach so it would be a good idea to give some Live yogurt for the duration of the anti-biotics and for a couple of days afterwards as well. Just a table spoon at each meal will be enough.

Please let us know how everything goes tomorrow,

Fiona

Did point that out Briefdog, no infection should be ignored and this one although not making most dogs sick can be devistating in some cases and it is irresponsible to allow an infected dog anywere need other dogs.

Hi fiona, I hope Holly is ok, it may be possible that something had scratched her throat - Mauser was coughing and retching about a year ago, but not constantly he would do it from time to time - cough and then retch like he was going to spit something up - I couldn't see anything in there and took him to the vet in case something was stuck that I couldn't see, when the vet looked down his throat it was red and sore, he thought he had probably eaten something he shouldn't have and scratched his throat and it was making him cough because it was irritated! let us know how you get on at the vets, julie:)
- By Christine Date 23.11.02 08:35 UTC
Hi Fiona, my Bonnie was diagnosed with KC once ages ago, but after a few days it didn`t seem right. Looked down her throat with a torch & she had a piece of black cotton wrapped round her back tooth & it was dangling down her throat. Always best to have the throat checked.
