My Golden oldie Poppy had problems a few months ago as she had Bladder Stones, since then she has been fine, she passed 9 all together. Now I'm not sure whether this latest problem is related to that, but to put it bluntly, Poppy Stinks!! The odour is musky - not That anal gland smell - but pooey too. She is eating well, body funtions ok - her breath smells a bit too.

Sorry to anyone having Lunch.

Any ideas??

Join the club :D

I am the proud owner of a stinky Mal ..so is Jean ..Hudson and Chewi seemed to develop the rank odour at about the same time. We ask on a few places what other Mal folks thought and it seems to be that they are not drying out fully after being walked or swimming.

Not sure if thats any help to you of course ...Goldens and Mals have different coats ...

Hi sweep, my golden used to stink too, she was called Sunny - but her name got changed to 'smelly' and she used to answer to that instead! Her breath smelled terrible. I would however take yours to the vet to have her checked out in case it is related in some way to toxins building up in her system, due to the stones??? HTH julie

ps I have read your post to mean your Golden retriever - but have just realised that you might have meant 'Golden Oldie' as in older dog????

It's not her coat that smells - it's her. I think that as you have said Melody it may be related to the Stones problem - I feel a trip to the Vet next week should things not improve.

Thanx for your input too 'muddydog', Poppy is my Golden oldie, 'cos she is a Golden Retriever and 11.5 years - Bless her and a Great Grandmother too! We love her but she stinks!

Hi Melody, was just thinking about the two stinkers! Chewi now has patchy smelly fur, parts of him smell like a mal is supposed to, and parts are still yukky:(. How is Hudson doing?
I am now thinking that it wasn't the water as when we went to the vet for our booster jab, she said it could be hormones due to age. Maybe the patchy smell is bearing that out?

Jean
P.S. She also checked out his anal glands (they were ok) and he loved every moment of it, huffing away and pushing his backside into her hand........yuk. She was surprised as apparently not many dogs enjoy the procedure.

Hudson is still as rank Jean :D We were going to bath him and blow dry him last week , but as the in laws are visiting next weekend , we have decided to do it during the coming week ...hope he smells a bit better for the visit ;)

Think it is damp with H .....have taken to putting the fire on for when he comes home from his walk and he lies in front of it ..big softie

I would suggest its food related.
My dog would break wind often until I changed his diet
to cooked minced beef, turkey, chicken and vegs.
When on high cereal based foods, the smell was horrid.
Also breath can smell for same reason food, plus if a tooth
has got some decay somewhere. Check over his teeth.
Even clean them. If he wont let you clean his teeth try
some logic gel on his gums. This does help.
