Hi . I was wondering does any breeders cull on here and what would your reasons be ? I couldn't unless there was a serious defect or problem which would cause it pain  . I know of a few people who do , one man who breeds pig dogs bitch had 9 puppies , he culled all bar 3 as he wanted to keep one and two for his mates he reckons it gives the puppies best chance to be  healthy  and easier on mum . And a  family "friend " ( cant really stand her but she doesn't get it ) is a registered breeder and shower and export puppies , a male of a different breed got to the bitch puppies were cross bred so she drowned all

The Animal Welfare Act, launched in April 2007, would make her liable to prosecution.  Fined up to £20,000 or imprisonment.

Sorry, but she would be reported if I knew her.

As to culling unwanted pups, although I'm against it, a vet should be doing this, not a dog breeder.

What are pig dogs?

I was about eleven when she drowned the puppies although I was upset I didn't think about reporting her . Pig dogs are a mix of breeds used over here for finding / bailin / catching wild pigs

Only just realised you're not in the UK where the Act applies.  A shame it isn't wordwide.

A finder bailer usually is a mix of kelpie /blue heeler (and similar breeds ) a lugger is more mix of pitbul/greyhound/danes ect

Is it actually illegal here?

I've always found that concept interesting because drowning in a warm fluid is exactly what happens to pups in the uterus when they are not born in time, often through breeder ignorance or Vets' lack of intervention.  It seems to me a much more natural way to end pups' lives than putting a needle through their stomach for a much slower death which I saw too many times as a veterinary nurse. :(

It's also now obligatory to transport malformed pups to the Vet, where they will often wait in pain for a Vet to arrive at the surgery rather than deal with them quickly at home as always used to be done.  But I suppose that things have changed and these days not all breeders know what they are doing.  Almost anyone who owns a bitch thinks that they should breed with no knowledge so I suppose this idea is to try and protect animals from this ignorance. :(

The kennel club last year changed it's general code of ethics, so for those breeders subject to it's rules this point applies:

3.  Will agree that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes.
