Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / how long after waters break? (locked)

Hi guys,

In your experiences how long do pups start after the waters have broke?

My girl (day 63 today) went out for a pee and then once she stood up liquid kinda gushed out her rear end...waters breaking?

Anyways that was about 3 hours ago.....how soon would you expect pups?

Last year her waters broke and 1st pup arrived within 50 minutes.

Thanks,

Kelly

If you're not confident with what's happening, then it would be better to talk to your Vet rather than ask other to diagnose over the internet at such a crucial time.

Talk to your vet immediately.

As you know from last year each puppy has its own water bag. When the first one breaks the pup needs to be delivered soon or there could be problems. It could, however, have been urine released when she moved, in which case there's no danger.

But ring your vet for advice now - don't waste time on the internet!

I have spoken to him (several times today) he isn't concerned but I also know vets aren't always great with whelping.

I'm really not sure if it was waters breaking or not....I do however remember the puppys water sacs were like tea colored this wasn't it was clear straw colored like urine.

She isn't straining or distressed and not pushed at all.

You guys have a lot more succint advice and I appreciate that but obviously I'm keeping in touch with the vet too (have the vet on call number handy)

This sound very much like what happened to my girl with her last litter.. prolonged period where mucous plug was shedding, limited restlessness then waters coming away with no signs of pups appearing. I was advised to wait no longer than 2hrs  which I did and then we went for a section. All 11 pups were ok but the first pup was very distressed and took a long time to get her to breath, it was touch and go for a little while and if we had left any longer and she would have died.  Also the longer the cervix is open and there is inertia the greater the risk of post partum metritis as bacteria from vagina can track into uterus, normal birth flushes bugs out with pups. Another reason for not delaying too long.
IMHO you need to be off to the vet ASAP.

Out of interest progesterone test kits can be used to help with determination of need for C section :: Progesterone levels of 5ng/ml indicates whelping should occur within 24hrs. When progesterone level is lower than 2ng/ml this is an indicator for C Section. Ref :: C Dumont & A Fontbonne.  Some in house Pre mate type Elisa test kits would give control ranges fror these levels.

I would get her to the vets as if it was the water sac that pup will probably have died by drowning now and causing obstruction for the rest!

Hi,

Just to update you...it wasn't the water sac only urine had a closer look outside where I thought it had happened. Spoke to the vet again and he was happy to let her wait (as was i)

Buuuut her waters did actually break this morning abour 6am and now we are sitting at 6 pups plenty more in there but quite happy to let her rest as she fired them out pretty quickly lol 4 in less than 90 mins!

Thanks,

Kelly

Congratulations on your litter. Locking this now as the question has been answered and before this turns into an advert.
