Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Standing after we have done the circuit...help
- By Dianesdog [gb] Date 23.06.09 09:59 UTC
My dog has just done 2 open shows and done well, but i need some advice with regards to getting him to stand for the judge once he has completed his circuit. He does currently stand but is VERY eager to have the treat and 'nuzzles' at the liver (in my hand) whilst he is supposed to be standing nicely. He is coming upto 7 months and just wondered if anybody could give me some pointers on how to get him to stand nicely and to just wait for the treat until after the judge has looked at him.

Thanks.

our puppy class trainer said to use a pointed upward index finger, get them to focus on this and treat with the other hand, slowly increase the time they look, using the word hold hold hold or whatever word you choose
break the treats into tiny bits and treat constantly at first then when they are eagerly looking at you ask them to hold, wait 2 seconds then treat

My 5 mth old was awful until I tried this method, now she is ace
she even uses my finger on the cicuit

I would suggest give him the treat as soon as he has done the circuit, dont go first so you have time to re-focus. At 7mths I wouldnt worry at all if he wriggles a bit, no judge should expect puppies to be statues. Make sure he learns that he gets the treat after he has done what he should to.
