Question........can a dog still suffer with prostate problems even after he has been castrated???

Brief history,  my boy is 9 1/2 ... he has in the last two weeks had two accidents in the house...    I am not concerned it is any form of infection...(but will check when I go to vets next week for his KC jab)

He just seems to not be able to hold his bladder as long as he used to..we are putting him out later at night for his last pee,  but he is waking us up almost every  morning at around 6  (not like  him)    to be let out.

He is drinking more than usual...  so it could be that, it could be jus told age setting in and loss of bladder control... but I was just wondering, if prostrate  problems could be the cause.

He has had so much to put up with recently  (loosing his eye to a tumor)  along with other health problems he has.... so really dont want to investigate if not necessary.

My gut feeling is "old age"   but one never knows for sure, nor stop worrying to be honest.

I cant see it being an infection as it would be getting worse and maybe other signs.

Thanks  !!!!!!!!

Yes. Entire dogs are more likely to get prostate problems, but castrated dogs still can, and it's less likely to be treatable when they do.

But your description sounds more like a UTI than prostate problems. Is there blood in his urine? Does he strain to poo?

Thanks for the quick reply..

No to both questions...  thats why I dont think it is an ITU...but you never know

He drinks a lot , and pees a lot... when he does pee, it can last for 5mins...  no blood, not squirting, and clear in colour.

But I will check it out with my vet... Will get specimen bottle from chemist today and drop it in tomorrow...

I do worry, over him,   to much sometimes... he is getting old, so it may be that.. but am on constant watch for his tumor coming back

They are a worry are`nt they

Very much so.

Straining to poo (and blood in the urine) can be an indication of prostate problems, so if he's okay in that respect then the chances are his prostate's fine.

Both these readings say the risk of some prostate problems diminish with castration but the incidence of prostate cancer is actually higher in castrated males.

If he is drinking alot more, then possibly signs of kidney probs, has he had any bloods done recently?

Could he have problems with his sugar levels? diabetes maybe. isn't drinking a lot connected with this.
I'm sure the vet will be able to do tests for any infections etc.
good luck.

personally i would have a blood test done as at 9 1/2 it could well be his kidneys showing their age - i have my older dog blood tested routinely infact every 3 months now to monitor his internal organs as despite looking totally bouncy and puppy like for 12 years old he has had liver probs for a while and now his kidneys are starting to pack up - at least having blood tests i have been able to change his diet to something more tolerable for his liver and kidneys and have had to juggle and reduce his other meds around to still help his djd and spinal spondylosis but be easier on his organs - without blood tests i would have carried on as normal and he may be a lot more unwell by now.
