Hello
I have a Bullmastiff puppy who is 10 weeks on Monday.
I had taught him to "sit" and even does it by 'hand signal' alone
without saying anything by 8 weeks.
He has learnt to lie "down" by 9 weeks he gets to me straight
away on the command "Louis COME!!"
He will "heel" when asked!
And will sit with a tasty treat in front of him, not touching it,
while i say "Leave it" and then "take it" on command!!!
How clever is he!! And to boot he is absolutely Gorgeous!!
I have pics if anyone is interested!!!
I have had my proud owner moment now!!!!! (lol)
thanks for listening!!!

Isn't it such a rewarding and fulfilling experience to know that you and you alone have taught your pup how to respond to certain commands!!
I myself have a Pit bull mastiff (pit bull/bull mastiff) and he too learned sit, lay down, come, high five, speak, wait, stay, stand, "in your cage," no biting, kisses, inside, outside and jump....all before 12 weeks!! I was so proud! I could not believe that a dog could learn so fast. I found that using plenty of praise, treats, and hand signals were key in teaching a pup so young. However, I had a major head start being that we had him since he was 5 weeks.
I always ask him to respond to some commands before i feed him everyday so that he stays sharp. This also helps him distinquish between the wrong responses and the correct responses because only the correct one's are rewarded with food. Plus, this has a secondary benefit...it helps to communicate to your pup who is in charge and who controls the resources in the house. Effectively allowing you to control your pup and making sure that he doesnt have an identity crisis in which he thinks he's in charge of the house. It's better to live in a people house than a dog house!
Well, enough blowing my dog's horn, keep up the training and good luck with your new puppy!!

10 weeks eh? Well done....only hope he continues it once he reaches the dizzy heights of puberty! Thats when they usually forget!!

I have (embarassed) memories of posting on here the Hudson could do this ...and do that .... :)
Ah well ..adolescence and all that ...it seems to make the mutts brain go to much and their ears go deaf :D
Good luck and well done with your pups , long may it continue

Pinky I'd love to see a photo:) My email address is under my profile:) And clever you for teaching him all that already- especially the lie *down*- I'm jealous- of all the things I did with Kassie we never managed to perfect the *down*- I still try and she's coming up for 8 months old now:) I tried by doing the *sit* then hold a tidbit to the floor slightly in front of her- making her slide *down* for the treat- she does it but not straight away and I still can't manage to remove the treat and get to do it on command:o So clever you and what's your secret:D :D :D :D :D

Stacey, have you tried from a stand, moving your hand with the treat towards her nose and then down, so she has to move backwards and down to get it? Maybe a different approach might work?:) (If she responds correctly, she should go down like Spotty Dog from the Woodentops, which will be no help to anyone under about 40!)
