I am so upset, last night my beautiful 6 year old Dobermann was killed by a branch that had fallen in her path. We went for our usual walk and let all the dogs off as usual, as she ran past it, the sharp end of the stick must have caught her in her side whilst she was running at full speed. We rushed her to the vets, who were abosolutely amazing, they were operating on her within about 5-10 minutes of us getting there without any forewarning or phonecall beforehand. They operated on her for about an hour and a half but there was just too much internal damage done to my poor little lamb. They said she needed at least another 2 hours of surgery and nothing was guaranteed and more importantly her quality of life so I told them to stop, they agreed it was best.
I can't stop crying, thinking about Storm who was my constant friend for 6 years, it was over so quick for her no illness, nothing, and now she is gone.
I would like to thank Michael Gibb who was the vet who worked so hard to try and save Storm and his wonderful staff who made sure Storm was comforted to the end.

thank you all for your kind words, I can't stop crying, everytime I try and speak I just cry, I try and eat but it makes me choke. How are we suppose to stop ourselves from getting so attached to our dogs its makes us feel as bad as this when they go? I suppose we don't, we take it because it's the price to pay for sharing our lives with such beautiful creatures.

Clair we can't stop ourselves getting attached, would we want to,
no matter how many dogs you have in you life it's still feels the same. I am so sorry to hear about Storm, a similar thing happened to one of my dogs this summer, luckily the angle of the wound meant he didn't have too much serious damage. We always warn of the danger of playing with sticks but how do you prevent something like this, it is just so tragic,
Take Care, Hugs Ingrid

Thanks Ingrid, I've managed pull myself together a bit now, don't know how long for, probably till someone speaks to me again :-) .
It was just a very nasty accident, nothing could have prevented it or prepared us for it, my only consolation is that happened so quick for her.
Thanks again everyone you have all been so kind

I'm so grateful for everyone's kindness, especially as none of you know me and I am fairly new to this board. I fell asleep earlier and feel much better for it, I can think a bit more clearly now and remember her how she was, always running :-) , showing off and acting the clown, and not what happened last night as much. I know in time it will get easier and when the time is right i will get another racing clown (glutton for punishment :-) ) I may even get a rescue Dobe, the house just feels empty at the moment.
I'm going to watch a film now and get, well you know, intoxicated :( .
Thanks once again all of you, for your kind thoughts

I don't know what to say- this is one of those situations where I wish I had a nice collection of poems like Mattie- perhaps she'll post one for you. It was sooooo nice of you to think of the dogs health, happiness and quality of life before your own feelings- you did the best thing possible in such a horrid situation.

So sorry to hear your dreadful news
We lost a dog recently and almost lost another so I know how you feel. You will never get over it but it does start to hurt less.
Sue
I cried for you on reading your post. my previous afghan pup died of a sudden illness in january 2002, at eight months old....the shock of a sudden loss is so terrible. I am so desperately sorry to think that you are going through that, because i know just how dreadful it is. In the future, when things are less raw, you will get solace from the fact that her last time with you was running free and happy, but it is difficult to see that now. I will never forget Portia, as you will always remember Storm, and that is a good thing. All our friends will be waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge, and we will play with them once again.
I wish you well.
Cathy.

Clair,
Remember the good times & that she had a home where she was loved 100%. No-one could've forseen what was going to happen.....My thoughts are with you, I know exactly how you feel.
My Addison died out on a walk, one minute he was running around forest land, the next he'd collapsed at my feet and was dead. I couldn't have done anything to prevent it. He took a piece of my heart with him that day.
You'll have good days & bad but time is a great healer. Take care.
