Hi i have a 13 mth male bullmastiff i raised him on raw but in feb changed him on to dry food as i wanted to improve his heal work and recal so he was fed on the walk.
he started to get spots on his chin and lips so i have put him back on raw he has been on raw for 3 wks now but the spots are not improoving they bleed every time he is on a walk and when he plays with the other dogs acutally every time he touches it on anything.

does anyone know what i could do to help heal him his face is so sore and he is entered for windsor in july and you cant touch his face at all.

any advise appreciated. (sp)

Hi we keep and show Bullmastiffs, Bullmastiffs go through a spotty stage at this sort of age its like teenage spots all of ours had them, however they were not sore to touch, id go to the vets and see what they say.

Our youngest is 12 months old at the moment, we have just starting supplimenting her food with a bit a natural yoghert, her spots have almost gone and her general condition has improved as we have shows comming up. Its a bit early to tell if it was the yoghert as she has only been on it 2 weeks but the signs are good, (we didnt put her on yoghert for this, its been a possitive side effect).

vets said possible food related or age and to dry his mouth after drinking and clean up after eating no ab as there is no infection.

will try yoghert it seem to look better in the mornings untill he plays with the others and it starts to bleed again.

he has always been a bit akward with his mouth and him mom was the same although she did not have spots just did not like to have her face touched.

When researching Mastiffs, I came across some info that said they are prone to spots on the chin if fed from plastic bowls, so if you use them in may be worth switching to ceramic or metal.

When Buster (Mastiff) eats, he has complete & tripe, he gets it all smeared in his chin, face, ears, nose, I have to give him a good wipe over after every meal to remove all the food and another good wipe over after drinknig to get rid of all the water & slobber off of his face. During the winter when he took to licking up the snow, getting his chin so wet all the time caused a spot and a sore patch to appear.

Just by keeping your dogs face clean and dry should help.

Once the spots get better and its not uncomfortable for him id start making a point of looking in your dogs mouth, we go over all our dogs before we give them their food bowl so that they accosiate it with a good thing, (as the judge has to be able to look into the dogs mouth without any poblems). We even took the puppy to town and had people do the same but with a treat so that she would be good with her mouth. However as its sore for him wait until its healed and dont push him if you took him to town as you dont want to make it worse.    

he is fed raw meaty bones am not in bowl and pm is fed raw tripe or other mince from stainles steel bowl and face cleaned after eating not that he like that but needs to be done.

i never use plastic bowls they dont clean right and the dogs chew the edges and bacteria is left in it so never use them.

LOL, Buster does not like his face being cleaned, he'll keep moving his face out the way of the cloth, he wiggles all over the place. It's a bit hard to get them used to it, I've tried wipe & treat, but then he needs cleaning again!

where does he eat this? I'm just wondering if he lays down to eat and his chin is getting irritated by something he's laying on?  Once the spots have cleared up, vasaline could be used as a barrier to protect him from whatever is causing the spots.

might be worth cleaning his face with colloidal silver (great for healing the skin) and put some in his drinking water or spray it into his mouth, that should help.

Aloe vera products? do you feed raw fish in with his bones? Oil is good for the skin, maybe try this. perhaps an imbalance in his diet.

we have had bullmastiffs and currently a dogue de bordeaux and i wipe his mouth after every drink and meal and also give him a daily wash round his mouth with diluted hibiscrub which seems to keep spots etc at bay.you could also try dermacton cream as it soothes irritation and helps skin heal.hope this helps,roy.
