Topic Dog Boards / Health / season seems to have started all over again!

Hi All,

My girl came into season and was quite sick for 4 days, then settled down and was fine, i have split her from her hubby (they are true love birds and hate being seperated) she had a litter last season and was mated on day 13 & 15 and season finished by day 18 and they were done with the matings. She is today on day 21 and started bleeding VERY heavily like she has started her season from scratch.

My male is whinning for her and she is looking for him but at day 21 she has always been completely finished, do you think her urge to mate is so strong that she has split her season because he has been taken away from her?

I feel sorry for them both as i would have been letting them run together again soon but now it looks like it may be ages before that and they miss each other soo much...what a shame :(

She is well in herself so i am not concerned just very out of her regular pattern.

I have her son coming back for a 2 week holiday on sunday too so it will be caos!

Would never have believed it - except it happened to me.  Yes, I do believe they can split their seasons.  I once had a girl in season for 2 weeks, and stop completely, no swelling, no discharge, nothing.  She wasn't mated.

After a week, her season came back full flood.  I was pretty worried by day 7, as this was now day 28 from her original start of season.  I took her to my vet, worried about a pyo.  He got some instrument to look up inside her, and told me that it was a perfectly normal season, no infection and no bleeding from the cervix.  He could see that I wasn't happy, so said he would give me antibiotics if I wanted them.

Got back from vet, opened back door so the gang could race up the garden, went in the kitchen to put the kettle on.  Only to find this bitch tied with her favourite boy.  She was still bleeding heavily.  She is a bitch that is a natural mother, and loves taking care of puppies.  I swear that she engineered this odd season, because she hadn't been mated, but wanted to be.  I have no other explanation for it.  The vet told me it wasn't possible to get pregnant on day 28.  She had 5 beautiful puppies.

Oh what a story.

You see this girl is a supeb mother, very strong natural instincts, i really believe that is what she has done because she hasnt been able to get mated and concieve....they are amazing arent they :)

I will keep an eye on her though

Hi,

Hope she stops bleeding soon - I would certainly be taking her to the vets for a check up to be on the safe side, maybe it is a split season, it's just not worth risking that it isn't something else though :-)

My girl was the same although it was her first ever season, she was in for nearly a total of 6 weeks, which was a nightmare with the boys!

I would take her to the vets, we had this once, it was pyometra. :-(

Well amber is STILL in season and on day 32 with no signs of it stopping, have spoken to my vet and as she is bubbly and eating and drinking normally he has said not to worry for now. One of my others came in season when amber was on day 12 and i think she has started it all over again because of her. My other girl is also now on day 20 which is longer than normal for her...i think they are in competition with each other.
The girl on day 20 is sister to mel who has recently had puppies and she wants them puppies for her own!!! Think this may be making her prolong her season too. She has gone all broody love her :)
Oh it is caos with the boys i just wish they would get them over with.

Will keep an eye on amber though as the only girl i ever had go this long ended up with open pyo so am a little worried but hopefully she will be just fine and is just being an awkward little madam. I do think she has just split her season, as when i think about it more the first half she wasnt swollen at all and she swells very early on, where now she is looking very swollen which is normal for her
If she changes in herself at all i will have her straight back up the vets.

Hope all carries on fine.  Calida was in for about 6 weeks so I know what a nightmare it is for the boys.

My girls do this to each other.  But I'm glad that your girl is her bubbly self, so it doesn't sound as if it's anything more sinister.  And you're right, apart frm being vigilant yourself, you can't do much else.  Good Luck.
