I was at a car boot sale this morning and a middle aged couple were walking 2 small cross bred bitches. They looked like short legged Russells.  One stall holder asked what breed they were and the owner replied "Jack Russell cross Chihuahua, that's why I've found a Chihuahua male to mate them with when they come into season when they're about 9 months old.  They should be smaller than these but will be healthier than real Chihuahuas so here's my phone number.  We've already got 4 reserved but I'm sure we'll have one for you out of the 2 litters.  We're on holiday from Wales but if you send a deposit, we'll deliver you a pup."!  She spoke with such confidence and was obviously there to show them off and to tout for business as they weren't looking to buy any car boot stuff.

I've never seen such a brazen, irresponsible attitude and for one rare occasion in my life I was speechless!  And whatever I'd have said wasn't going to change this lady's ideas anyway. :(

Seems to be about par for course these days :(   I live in Wales and am sick of people stopping me to tell me how much I can make out of breeding my dogs    I usually say they're neutered and get told I'm mad not to breed :(

Why is it the world and his wife think of nothing but making money quickly these days :(
- By WestCoast Date 12.06.09 08:30 UTC
It was the attitude that astounded me Dill!  The confidence of ignorance! :(  And so many people were listening to her.
- By ice_queen Date 12.06.09 09:29 UTC
Such a shame :(  And breeding them at 9 months:(  Dred to think how many litters she plans to have from each of them.  Poor things.

Sometimes there's just no point trying to explain to someone, I just hope and pray all the pups live healthy lives with great families.

Or both current bitches are infertile!

Absolutely.  She wouldn't have been open tp any other thought process!

Or both current bitches are infertile!
Ooo, I hadn't thought of that one!  You're more wicked than me!!  :) :)

Lets wish they are sterile or due to their ignorance during whelp because they are so young they need a section and the uterus is warped so they have to be spayed and the bills a ton of money and then they get placed in a loving home. dreams

Here's a thought. One good reply could be "Well I did breed a litter once but it ended up costing me a fortune in vets bills and food and I had to keep 3 puppies as not all sold and they chewed up my new sofa, so I can't possibly afford to do it again."
- By Merlot [ir] Date 12.06.09 10:28 UTC
You could always do the innocent "Oh are you a puppy farmer then? I have heard of those!!"
May make anyone listening think again!!!

What have these two poor bitches done to deserve such an uncomfortable fate? :-(

Had the owners listen to the rubbish spouted on THAT programme and believe that what they are doing as they are crosses etc. is so much better than buying pedigrees from health tested show dogs!

Love it, I shall remember that one!

I would never wish that upon any dog.  Or any owner to go though that.  Thats why I wish the bitches in infertile and therefore unable to have puppies.

Though will have to remember the "Well I did breed a litter once but it ended up costing me a fortune in vets bills and food and I had to keep 3 puppies as not all sold and they chewed up my new sofa, so I can't possibly afford to do it again." Thats a great one.

And if they do prove to be infertile the owner will flog them to whoever will have them.  I just hope they live a long and happy life - preferably without such an arrogant and ignorrant owner.
- By ice_queen Date 12.06.09 12:22 UTC
Will cost them to find that out though and better then being forced though an operation and then flogged! :)

Although, you never know, the two bitches might end up being the most spoilt mothers with everything they need given to them and the pups reared healthily and well socilised. :)

what a truly dreadfull thing to wish on any poor bitch.. I cannot believe that anyone could want this to happen.. :-(

In response to Westcoast.

This type of 'breeding' is unfortunately so common now. It is sadly, I feel, only going to get worse. It doesn't help, when cross-breeding is being given credence by celebs and journo's etc.  As you posted, I was just reading an article in a well known ladies story mag, the writer was out and about and met someone with their new puppy- ' a Cavachon' they proudly told me' !!! (the exclamation marks are mine)

Well i don't wish it on the poor dogs nor do i want them to churn out litter after litter for their owners pocket, but they are going to be exploited. But if something was to happen which would be unfortunate for the dogs involved and it cost the owners money, maybe they would think twice about breeding. I do not wish the poor girls any harm. Maybe if these pups don't sell and the owner has to give them away at 14 weeks and spend a lot of money feeding them they think again.

That is awfull.

Just recently I have had some of my customers say that they would like to mate their dog as it has never had a girl !!! if you know what I mean.
One customer with a very overweight ( fat ) but lovley Scottie said that she was approached by a man who had a bitch and asked her if when his dog was next is season could he come down ( he stays in Glasgow ) and let them MATE ?  Appart from the fact she didnt know this man at all I warned  her that because her dog was a wee !! bit over weight , she would have to be carefull as her little dog would most probably have a heart attack in the process as it was quite a demanding thing for a male dog to. I was tacktfull when I told her !!
Oh another one a man with a Springer was asked by a lady  who had a Lab ,if he would breed his dog with hers as the best dog she ever has was a Springer x Lab ???

I try to explain about breed lines and how its not that simple or that just because the dog has not been with a female there is no need to let them.
I also said to the man  with the springer that just because this lady had a dog that was Lab x Springer and it was a great dog did not mean that she would get the same again and what would happen to the rest of the pups in the litter ??

i would mention how much money it costs to breed and rear a litter and the cost of health tests and then if they don't health test they could be sued by new owners! Maybe also the 4 weeks without sleeping and the 4 weeks you need to book off work or more, how you are not afraid of any dog fluids from any orifice as you get covered when having puppies on a regular basis that it doesn't bother you anymore. Scare them with the very true fact that in this market with buyers getting more clued up that she may not be able to sell the puppies and may have 10 dogs to feed and poop scoop. C-sections, eclampsia, inertia all the things that could go wrong.

I think many breeders could right a horror story and the best way to throw your, age, looks, clean house and money away, not to mention some of the relationships that could come under strain to an unsupporting inexperienced spouse. Ignorance is bliss you see.

I know someone who went though a horrible time with a litter. Bitch had a C-Section with 11 live puppies.  Bitch was lost on the table so 11 puppies had to be hand reared and brought up without a mum.  the owner did it (without much sleep) and was so upset she had lost her precious girl.   I tell some people that story and you see there faces change as they think they could loose their girl.  I don't tell them I also know of plenty of other healthy litters though...Leave that fact out!

Do you have a lot of litters then? The breeders on here that I know well only breed very occasionally. Or am I just misreading that? :-)
- By Astarte Date 13.06.09 12:37 UTC
think your reading the way its written right but not the intent, i think it should read

"how you are not afraid of any dog fluids from any orifice, you get covered on a regular basis when you have puppies"

and so you do, and what a shocking shade of green some of it is!
