My youngest bitch had her first season starting mid May. She is nearly 9 months old. Since then I have noticed her undercarriage has been swelling up and I can feel something like breast tissue there and her teats now look very pink. Just wondered if this is normal. I don't remember my other bitch changing like this after her season.

Are you sure she did not accidentaly get caught out bu a male dog ??

If not she could be having a phantom pregnancy. If that is so you should watch her and if the teats become very hot and swollen. She may also be starting to produce milk. I would take her to the vet and he will perhaps give you some medication for her as she may need help in getting rid of any milk that she may have .
These false pregnancys can lead to other things if not taken care of like womb infections ( dont mean to get you worried ) so just keep an eye on your girl.

Yes, it's normal for a bitch to have a phantom pregnancy after a season. Some have minimal symptoms, some have excessive symptoms.

If you're 100% certain she hasn't been mated, treat her as normal.

My first thought was the same as lilacbabe.  Teats turn pink on pregnant bitches.

If your sure she can't possibly be pregnant, then the answer has to be a phantom pregnancy.  Poor girl!

Yes she definitely can't be pregnant. My older bitch does have phantoms in so far as she goes all broody and digs nests etc but her undercarriage has never swelled up and she hasn't produced milk. The older girls timetable fits a real pregnancy, with nesting starting 9 weeks after her season. Ellies season has only just finished so I hadn't considered a phantom. do phantoms start this soon after a season? my older girl has just been mated but she is not showing any signs like this at all and her season started less than a week after Ellies.
