Hi Everyone.
I have advertised my litter of 3 pups and have sold them all to lovely people, they are still here with me(the pups, not the people). I had 1 enquiry about the male from a "Lady" who wanted him for her 3yr old daughters birthday present next month!!!!...As you can imagine I was a bit dubious and asked questions about who would be the main carer, feeding, toileting and she said that her daughter would be as it was going to be hers! I refused to sell him. She absolutely flipped and told me in no uncertain terms that once she had paid me the money for him, he was hers to do with as she liked when she liked. I politely said that a 3yr old wasnt capable of looking after a puppy and although she meant well i strongly advised her to rethink her birthday present!!! OOOOPS...She then told me to shove the pup where the sun didnt shine!

So pleased I refused!!!
Honestly some people have no manners.

lol good  for you , i dont know how some people got the cheek to even ring and ask coming out with such stupid thing, when i advertised my Only pup from my bully last year i got some man ringing who at first i thought he was ok, asked good questions seemed to know about my breed then started telling me he had got his kids a Rottie last year top pedigree but it used to jump up at his kids and started getting BIG (IT NEVER DID !!!! :-o ) So he got rid of it after 5 months!! :-(  , ((((BUZZ))), WOW THATS ENOUGH!
i tried to tell him that my pup may just destroy his home chew it to bits and eat you mobile phone, he was still sure he wanted him, i ended up saying someone else was viewing that evening and id call him back to let him know, of course i never did, and i ended up keeping my boy no one was quit good enough for him :-) and his is my Baby :-) , happy ending after all,

Scary story here. A lady who has a litter to my boy at the moment had all pups sold. One lady asked to have her pup at 6 weeks. Of course the answer was no. She got a bit shirty and said why not as the pups are weaned so no problems going away at six weeks. It turns out that she has a dalmation due to whelp 2 weeks later (when the pup would be 8 weeks old!!!).
The breeder had never been told that there was a dalmation in the house let alone due to whelp. Needless to say deposit has been returned. It is amazing how that one nearly got through the net.

My standard reply to the " I want to buy a dog for a child".... Is "get him a bike".........then I put the phone down.

I had a phone call with my last litter.  I asked what the pup was wanted for.  The man said "for the kid" and when I asked his age, which was 5, I proceeded to tell him his responsibilities for the welfare of the pup.  I nearly died when he shouted to someone (presumably his wife), hey - did you know that we're responsible for the welfare of a dog?

Not known for my tact, I told him to go to Toys R Us!

Only this week i had an email , the lady wanted a pup for her 10 month old baby daughter , i asked if she had ever met a newfie and she said  "oh we have seen one being walked in the neighbourhood"  i then told her of the slobber , mud water , grooming and suggested  she met some up close , she said she would speak to her husband , todate she has not been in touch, hope she sees sense and doesnt bother !!!

I am slightly paranoid about anyone who rings so when looking for a home for a young bitch I googled their telephone number and or email address. Many of the email addresses linked to puppy farming type websites and the phone numbers brought up all ads placed online to sell puppies.

This worked for me and let me screen out the undesirables

replying under Newfienook, but not to her.. just a general reply..

WE cannot tar everyone parent/child with the same brush.. Now I do believe that children should have the priviledge of growing up with a dog, but never to have sole responsibily.. and I have never allowed a pup to go to a home where it has been purchased for a child

But.. my last litter, I did sell a pup to a family who wanted the pup for their daughters birthday.. aged 9.. and they waited for a long time on this pup.. birthday is long gone, (originally came to me for pup from last litter) and next birthday nearly due.. but what the girl did get for her birthday, was a YKC membership, and a junior membership to Lab club of Scotland.. months after her birthday, she finally got her pup.. after proving to me (yes she lives only 15miles from me) that she was responsible, and knew what ownership of a puppy entailed.. which included, giving up much of her free-time after school.. saying no to friends who wanted to do other things.. and she finally got her pup 3 weeks ago.. pup is now vaccinated, and we are all meeting up at ringcraft tonight..

The girl is an absolute sweetheart of a child (says one who does not 'do' children lol) and is so proud of her puppy and 1st showdog..

Nice post

I have two daughters aged 11 and 13 both of whom have loved dogs and cared for them alongside me since they were very small.

They have known the ups and downs of dog ownership- losing some well loved old friends along the way.

Both girls have trained in obedience since around seven years old and are now in their second year of doing junior handling in the show ring and gradually getting a bit better at this.

They walk the dogs before and after school but the bit that makes me smile is when I occassionally hear them whispering secrets or problems to the dogs.
I had an old mongrel when I was their age who I shared all my problems and worries with and I will never forget that.

PS Neither daughter had a baby walker and one collie we had used to nudge my youngest to her feet to balance on him and walk her around the room- I should add only when we were there and I would instantly be at her side.

Kids and dogs can be great if the children know to respect and care for the animal

Im glad that many people have the same view as me regarding their pups. I am not against children, having 1 of my own! I am against a puppy being bought FOR the child. After sleepless nights and feeding and hours and hours of playing and socialising etc, I have no wish for any pup to be used as a plaything. I love my babies and I want the right homes for them and I really think I have found them. Good luck to everyone who have pups ready to go. I will cry, i know!!!!!

Ahh thats a really nice outcome and im sure she will do well its differant if the child has an interest in ringcraft and are going to be helped by her parents to improve and learn which in your case sound like the familys a nice supporting one and your pups in good hands,
my 11 year old son is great with out Rottie and has very good control over him when we go out (he's not alone of course) he got first place for best child handler last year in a local show just for fun , he enjoyed it so much i dont  think he'd do to well with my Young bully he's a bit of a devil lol,
i love it when kids take a real intrest its helped my boy alot having a dog their are times i cant get thu to my son due to his Autisum but then i send our zeus into him and he does the trick and brings him out of his shell,

toffeecrisp ...i had a beauitful bunch of flowers from a couple that had a pup from my last litter deleverd to my door afew days after he had gone and a card with the breeders poem in it ...well has you can imagen i cried buckets ...my family and the family of this pup are the best of friends now :) ...thats what we all want for our babys isnt "the best"
meaning love and responserble owners :) xx

I think its terrible to buy any animals as a toy or gift for a young child. my brothers nabour keeps doing it for there girl, they brought her a cat.....she got board cat was kicked out side....got a new dog....dog ate cat.....then they got her a rabbit.....she got board rabbit left outside in an indoor hutch with no food....the dad was going to shoot the rabbit, brother saved her and sent her up to me.....then they brought her a westy puppy......she got board....puppy now a dog and is untrained and agressive......then brought her a hamster.....Guess what she got board of it....my brother took it in.

Her parents never seem to lurn, either that or they dont care about what it does to the animals, the rabbit i had was tarrifyed of everything, the cat died, the hamster was sick and they hate the dog as it is agressive and barks all the time, i also dont think it is fully house trained either.

I dont have a problem with kids either , i was brought up with dogs , but for a first time dog owner to want a dog for a baby , i am involved in welfare  and belive me the number of dogs coming thru because owners didnt realise what they were buying is quite scary, also the breeders who sell these pups  dont help either, i am not saying people with tots shouldnt have dogs but be realistic with the choice of dog they get and the time involved in looking after them.

> The breeder had never been told that there was a dalmation in the house let alone due to whelp.

And it's the lies that really annoy.  As you know, when someone is on your waiting list, you do get a chance to get to know them.

I had someone that had waited 9 months before I had a litter with something suitable.   Bear in mind that this was a potential pet home.  It was during a telephone conversation after the litter was born, that the lady let slip about her husband wanting to breed.  They have never owned a dog before, and talking about breeding something that is very difficult to whelp.

I'm afraid that I told her I felt she hadn't been straight with me, and that I wasn't selling her a puppy.  I realise that she had waited a while, but as far as I'm concerned, she was trying to deceive me.  You could tell how awkward she felt once she'd said it.  Whoops!

Totally agree.  But your children had been taught these things.  It is fair to say that loads are not.  I think it's great that yours confide in the dogs!

Just having had my first litter of 1, it was the hardest decision to make - but references played a huge part, plus she is a dog walker - and having met them and seen them with him - know I have made right choice.  They are visiting again this weekend - and then when they collect him to take him home in 3 weeks time.  I know we all are going to cry buckets as we will.
