Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeding GSD's for working
- By gsdsrock [gb] Date 09.06.09 16:41 UTC Edited 09.06.09 16:50 UTC
I have been breeding and showing GSD's off and on and have held my Affix for over 30 years, But these days I mostly keep them as pets an for obedience due to not being able to gait my dogs due to back problems. My question is, are there any Dog owners who use theirs for working who have their dog 'at stud' with the necessary health checks (hips, haemophilia etc) as I am finding it hard to establish a working line. Most articles I come across are related to Breed an not obedience or working! I would be looking specifically for the 'older Alsatian' or 'Middle of the Road'  as personally I find these (types!) far more biddable.

Any help would be appreciated

The only correctly coated dogs bred to work with all the relevant health tests done will not be the"Alsatian"type, most people in Obedience who call their dogs working type breed longcoats & most do the basic hip scoring.

I personally would not want any GSD bred from the so called UK working lines, because the vast majority are longcoated & have known genetic conditions in their pedigrees that are not written about..

The only real bred for work GSDs are those from the continent from VPG/Schutzhund lines. They come from lines with generations of health/temperament/proven working ability dogs & have characters to die for-biddable yet with a very high work drive.

There are several lovely VPG dogs at stud here in the UK which are also working VPG over here & on the Continent.

Not all German dogs are of the show type
