hi,

i have a 14 month old kooikerhondje, they are supposed to gain wait very quickly.
as a puppy she was very fat and i was forever trying to get her slim, the villige fete holds a dog show that i entered her in to and the judge said that she needed to loses a few pounds, so i put her on a diet. in february i put her on eukanuba. i found that i was having to give her a tiny ammount,  because she was putting on weight.
it was around the time she hit a year in april (possibly may) she lost weight rapidly, i put it down to me walking her further and more often (as the days were longer). i am filling her bowl i add more meat and walk her shorter distances. but she is not putting weight on. she is still in the weight guidelines for the breed she weighs 12.2kgs but to look at she should put on atleast another 2kgs.

are there any foods or suppliments i can give her?

thaks for any sugetions!

Lots of youngsters start to regulate there own body weight around this age, she may have had a growing spurt, chubby puppies quite often become gangly teenagers.
If you are really worried have her checked at the vets but i would really not worry, she will fill out as she matures.

What was she being fed before eukanuba?  How do her siblings compare?  (If you have seen them)

Which lines is she from?  I've noticed some Koikers are slimer then others....

Are you sure she's just not reached the leggy stage? lots of pups look quite skinny when they start to become teenagers and then before you know it they start to fill out again.
Check with the vets though.

I know people who once their dogs get to the age yours is and i have done the same is to feed a small amount of raw breast of lamb each week. But one thing i would say is you need to know your dog and lines of and know that by doing this you aren't going to put more weight on her that she needs right now.
Too much weight as you know on a growing dog can have detrimental effects later on in life.
If she is from a very slow maturing line then i would wait for nature to take its course, especially if she is eating well on her complete diet.

kooikers are fully grown at the age of 6-8 months which is true to mine, she hasnt grown since. looking at siblings there would be now way of telling, one is very fat, and one is just right.
she is from the Crunchcroft kennel, but her father is from the Unosta kennel. both lines are very filled out. and in no way are kooikers leggy.

i wish i could show you how thin she did get. my mums partner is a vet and it was him that alarmed me of it, i haddent really noticed; he said that she could be taken away from me she was that thin, but i was feeding her alot.

she has started to put weight on, she is alot better.

thanks anyway.

she wasnt slim, well inst slim. flick is bones sticking out thin, her ribs were so easy to feel. and yes i was at MID-HERTZ, that was not a good day for flick and i didnt show her as good as i have done.

She didn't seem to thin at Mid herts and yes I know both the mum and dad!  Your's is a little taller and racier then her sisters but I would consider changing her food to one higher in fat.  This is also a slow maturing breed so ight just take her a wile to fill out.

If in herself she is active, good coat and shiny eyes I wouldn't worry too much just yet, just slowly try and get the weight on her.   Does she eat all her dinner and eat around the recommended amount?

yeah, she is fine now, i just uped her food, we are going to put her back on wagg (eukanuba is gettting too expencive now), Flick used to be overweight on that, i will just add in some lintbells. her wirey bit has gone.
to top it all of she is now qualified for crufts and we helped get edwina win 4th in the breeders stakes at scca

if you had seen her when she was at her thinest her spine was sticking out and her pelvis was really sticking out.  i had bathed her in the morning at MID-HERTS so she was fluffed out and looked bigger, the judge did feel her spine then.
