I'd have said German Shepherd too. What breed would you have said?
- By magica [gb] Date 06.06.09 14:44 UTC
I used to watch that as a kid and yes it was a German Shepherd- just not the normal black & tans we see here all the time.
- By St.Domingo Date 06.06.09 14:44 UTC
I would have guessed at a GSD cross .

this was my favourite programme as a child.
I believe 'London' was owned and trained by Chuck Eisenmann, and he was a german shepherd, though I also understand he was known as a Shiloh Shepherd... it's complicated! lol

GSD, a bad one, but a GSD never the less.

Your right Louise he does look like an NI but don't their origins incldue gsd.?
I would be surprised if he was a Shiloh they are bred to be substantially bigger and chunky than a gsd.
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 06.06.09 17:52 UTC
they do include GSD to make them more trainable apparantly, try telling him that! But you can see the gsd resemblance in him.

Did NIs exist back in the 50s/60s?
- By Astarte Date 06.06.09 18:21 UTC
i was just wondering that...

He wasn't a "Shiloh"he was a grey dog(called sables here in the UK)the facial markings he had were also seen in many similar dogs of the time & in this country lots of the Fentwood GSDs had tese markings. "Shiloh"shepherds weren't "invented"until 1974 when breeding as a separate breed in the USA began of very large dogs from GSD bloodlines

The film, that was followed by two TV series, was made in the USA & the TV series made in Canada(in Black & white like the first TV series)& this starred the first London, the TV series(65 episodes)starred the second London. The series was made from 1963 to 1965.

The second TV series was made in colour & was filmed between 1979 to 1985

Chuck Eisenmann was a professional baseball player, if he is still alive he will be 91 years old !

He looked nothing like the NI the facial markings are similar, but all Chuck Eisenmann's dogs were grey(sable)GSDs

Doesn't remind me of a NI and they weren't around in those times, definitely a GSD.
- By Lea Date 07.06.09 16:13 UTC
I thought a husky cross GSD or Malamute cross GSD LOL
But I bow down to your better judgements LOL
Thankyou
Lea :) :) :) :)

Oh Gawd, that made me cry, but it's been one of those weeks!!  After I took Ellie to be pts, as I was on my way home, that was played on the radio (the DJs had a phase of playing it) and I remember sitting at traffic lights bawling my eyes out.   Then today, at training, 2 Golden Retriever pups arrived (totally seperate)!!!  She would have been 12 last Tuesday.  I miss her so much

Do you think fate is trying to tell me something.

(Sorry just realised I've gone totally OT!)

This says German Shepherds too. A bit paler than what I'm used to seeing - could they not be one of the "break off" German Shepherd breeds, like Shiloh...?

Old friend wikipedia....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiloh_Shepherd

and wikipedia reference....

http://www.shilohshepherdtssr.com/Whatcolorismydog.pdf

Since they were apparently bred from GSDs, starting in the 70s, maybe wotsitcalledyouwereaskingabout was a GSD with slightly unusual colouration.
