Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bad things come in 3

It's been a very bad 3 weeks. First we lost Dandy the old Golden, then we lost the litter of pups a few days ago. Today I took Ripley my VERY most special girl (my most special dog ever, out of all I've had in my life -she's everything to me) to the vet to be spayed, and just by chance the same morning I found a mammary tumour on her -it had appeared very quickly. The vet removed it at the same time as spaying her and he said it was very nasty indeed. She's ended up having major surgery and now we have the wait to see if it is bad or not -I did request the lump to be sent off. I'm out of my mind with worry as there's been a few Malinois I know of that's died of cancer so I know it happens. Ripley is 9 but otherwise in excellent condition, her latest show report in Our Dogs this week from SKC where she took CC and BOB says she looks half her age and could have kept going all day.

so sorry to hear of all this happening. You must be in a tizzy!  Mind whirling and all.  Sorry for the losses of your golden, and the litter of pups.  Lets hope your old special girl makes a very speedy recovery.  Thinking of you.  ((((hugs))))

What an awful 3 weeks! :(

I know what you're going through, I had my Ch bitch speyed just as she was coming into season for the same reason, we had the stud all lined up and had to forget having a litter - it would have been her second.   I couldn't take the chance with her health and it was growing by the day.

That was 3 years ago and so far she's fine - more than fine in fact :)

Hope you have a good result - and soon!

I'm so sorry Marianne, what a rotten time you've been having recently. You must be worried sick about poor Ripley - here's hoping she makes a speedy recovery.
- By poppity [gb] Date 05.06.09 18:19 UTC
I hope you and Ripley are together for a long time to come.Sending very best wishes to both of you and condolenses for the loss of Dandy and the pups.x
- By Goldiemad [gb] Date 05.06.09 21:24 UTC
So sorry for your losses, amd keeping my fingers crossed for Ripley. My MIL's little cross had a mamary tumour that came up really quickly, and following its removal, went on to live to the age of 17. Fingers crossed for Ripley.
- By JeanSW Date 05.06.09 21:30 UTC
Sending positive vibes.  You must have had all bad luck at once.  Hoping that Ripley recovers well and the sample is benign.  We are all thinking of you.

> mammary tumour

So sorry to hear this. I do hope it turns out OK for Ripley. We once had a complete mammary strip done on a 10 year old OES bitch we had due to tumours. She was fine afterwards, though she did take a while to recover. This was before the days of chemo for dogs so the surgery was all the treatment she had. She lived for another good few years and died of something completely different.  It needn't necessarily be the end. Fingers crossed for you both.

marianne i'm so sorry, what a horrible time your having.

thinking of you and i hope Ripley can be treated effectively.

so very sorry.
- By Goldmali Date 06.06.09 13:24 UTC
Thanks everyone. Ripley came home yesterday with two wounds, the biggest was the tumour removal site which is nearly a foot in length.(But as they are both underneath her, you can't actually SEE anything unless she is laying on her side, standing up she looks normal. Her coat is very thick so hides a lot.) She was SO out of it, having stopped breathing several times during the surgery. Today she is MUCH better but obviously must take it very easy. She's getting spoilt rotten and she's with me all the time day and night. We should have the report back anytime from end of next week onwards. The vet did think though it most likely was a malignant tumour, so we can just hope he got good enough margins. THANK YOU in particular to everyone who shared stories of bitches who had had the same done and gone on to love several more years -that REALLY made me feel better. You're all GREAT, every one of you.
- By Astarte Date 06.06.09 13:35 UTC
bless her, the poor thing it sounds like a heavy op. i really hope they got it all.

you need to take care of yourself as well as your girl, you've had a hell of a time.

thinking of you all, please let us know how everything goes.

- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 08.06.09 09:27 UTC
Marianne, so sorry to hear all the problems that you have been having. Just so glad to hear that Ripley is okay.
You know, a Golden I know ended up having a double mammary strip about 3 years ago. She is still here and still showing in the veteran classes.
- By luvhandles Date 08.06.09 10:37 UTC
Just caught up with this and wanted to add my love and best wishes, hoping that Ripley makes a full recovery and that the mass was nothing sinister. xx
- By annieg3 [gb] Date 08.06.09 18:52 UTC
Just caught up too. Thats it for your bad luck now. Just good, good and more good from now on.!!!
- By Teri Date 09.06.09 11:56 UTC
Hi Marianne

sorry things have been so rough lately :(  You must be heartbroken over Dandy and your little one's distress at losing her pups.

Sending positive thoughts and vibes to you and Ripley that her op has removed any traces of danger and that she has many happy years ahead to share with you and keep the others in line :)

God bless, Teri
- By Goldmali Date 09.06.09 12:14 UTC
Thanks Teri -thanks everyone. We will have Ripley's results later this week. Both she and Ginny are getting closer to normal now although it will be a while yet before they are 100 %. It's really nice, normally those two tolerate each other but don't LIKE each other -Ginny being my only Papillon who doesn't really like big dogs. But it's like they have something in common now, and today I have found them cuddled up together on the sofa several times!

> We will have Ripley's results later this week

Well she's officially on the much bent ear of Him Upstairs :)  How lovely that your girls are 'sticking together' at this time - in such instinctive animals there's bound to be a level of understanding between them that we can't begin to understand.

Will look forward to updates - please God, good ones!

The tumour was BENIGN!!!!!!!!!! Slightly atypical so the lab said to watch her closely, but even so, everything removed with clean margins, looks good, nothing much to fear at the moment!! :) :) :)

The only one of mine to ever have cancerous mammary tumours lived quite happily for 5 years after a partial mammary strip at 8 1/2, and her death was totally unrelated to Cancer, so Ripley really should be fine.

Sending all you and yours the best positive thoughts.
