Can anyone please advise.  Willow my 11 month OES has recently had her eyes tested, results were clear.  She is booked for hips to be checked in July when she reaches 1 year old.  My vet has quoted £40.00 to the BVA, and £175.90 for the xrays, is this about right???? or should I phone around for other quotes?

In October 08 I paid £100 to the vet and £35.40 for the BVA fee.

As you can only be scored once you want to go to a highly recommended vet with lots and lots of experience.  Although your xray fee seems a bit high it would be well worth it to get a person who will get you the best xray to submit.  If you are comfortable you have the right vet then the cost doesn't seem so bad :)

Is this going to be under GA or Sedation, this can also effect the price.
I think it's a little steep for just the hips to be done.

I know last May my boy had hips and elbows done under sedation and the whole thing including BVA costs were around £170..
My vet were trying to charge £300 under GA..

2 years ago I had my bitch's hips and elbows x-rayed and the cost was roughly £240. This was under GA. I think that where you live may also have something to do with the cost.

I had both hips and elbows done together last year under GA and the cost was £150 for the plates + BVA costs.

Cost me £187.00 6 weeks ago tomorrow for a medium sized dog.  Just enquired with the BVA how long they are taking to come through and they said 2 weeks at the moment, they are meeting every single week.  Unfortunately my vet sent the wrong form off so I had to go back in and re-sign them 3 weeks ago.  The BVA haven't had them back since and now the vets think that they have lost them!  No back-up nothing.

I am really annoyed that it looks like I'm going to have to have her re-done.  I am not a happy chappy I can tell you!  Previously Ihave only paid £130 for them to be done so I was shocked at the £57.00 increase this year!

Wow, quite a vast difference in prices.  The price was for G.A. and hips only.  I will shop around and see if I can get a better price but with elbows aswell.  Properbly right about the area Im living in.

The last one I had scored was in Germany so can't really compare that one, but the one before that was done in 2004 under GA cost £80 plus BVA fee that was for a 9kg dog.

Had mine done 3 months ago, £40 to the BVA and my vet charges £70 for hips only but i dont like GA so mine are done under sedation :)

Sounds a bit pricey, K9OURS. I paid £36.40 to the BVA (the vet forgot to add on the VAT), £70 for the plates and about £40 for anaesthesia. I did opt for pre-op bloods which added about another £25 or so. It's definitely worth ringing round for quotes, because there is quite a difference as I discovered, but I think by far the best bet is to ask other owners/breeders for a recommendation so you go to someone who is known to do a really good job as opposed to just a cheap one. Good luck!

Ive had to dogs done in the last 12 months in 2 different parts of the country - the first the dog was in for another op so chose to get her hips/elbows done at the same time - the cost £400  just for hips/elbows - I was slightly horrified!

4 weeks ago I had the 2nd dog done just hips and it was broken down to £40 to the BVA (i think the fee went up January time) and around £85 for the plates (and we were given a copy to take away). Still waiting for those results - so they are talking longer than 2 weeks. When we had them done the vets said they were taking 6 weeks and hes a vet who does 2 days a week just doing BVA xrays.

I had my GR bitch  xrayed last tuesday under sedation and i paid £110 to the vet and £40 to the BVA. I noticed the BVA price changes depending on the amount of dogs you are having done.

Debs mine was done by a lady in Hampshire who i know is very well respected in the south.
Some vets i know will charge more, she just does hip and elbow x-rays.

If this is somewhere you would be interested in many of us have a number for her or you can do a search for Marilyn Baker on here for contact details.

Someone else has already made this comment, however, please do not shop around based solely on price - an inexperienced vet can effectively 'wreck' a set of plates giving a false and much higher score.  Only recently, we persuaded someone who the vet had diagnosed with HD despite no symptoms to not submit the plates and go to a more experienced vet; the dog came back with a score below ten -so as you can see the difference can be quite substantial - she has subsequently taken this further - but it does (again) raise the need to consider having specified vets to take the plates, in pretty much the same way as we have with eyes.

As someone once said to me "you can't make a pair of hips look better than they are, but it is easy to make them look worse than they are" :(

I do a 200 mile round trip to take my dogs for scoring, and I know there are some go even further.  Ask around for recommendations and go with someone who other breeders are happy to use
