Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 5 week old pups with the runs
- By JanW [fr] Date 04.06.09 09:37 UTC
Hi everyone hope you can give me some advice.  My 5 week old puppies have been doing really well up till now, they have been eating well and putting on lots of weight.  However this morning when we checked on pups noticed that there was several soft poos didn't worry too much as it has been very hot here, especially the last two nights!  Pups were not very interested in breakfast and have just cleared up some very runny poo with jelly like stuff!  Pups are all very lively, calling for their lunch, we are booked into vet for this pm.  They have water and I have added a probiotic to their food.  Is there anything else I can do, could it be just one of those blips with the pups or more serious. Any help gratefully received.
Thank you
Jan

Don't know about anyone else but anytime i've come across jelly like poo then it's fairly safe to assume a worming issue but obviously if you are worried about them then get them to the vets :)

Jelly in poo can also be Giardia.

Hi Jan,

I know you've done the probiotic thing but a good squirt of ProKolin - probiotic with Kaolin added usually does the trick. Kaolin will bind and the other will repopulate the gut with desirable gut flora.

If it were a worm burden sufficient to cause this problem, you would probably be seeing some evidence of the little beggars :-)

Hi, thanks for the advice.  Saw the vet and she was pleased with the pups I took, she said they were not dehydrated and looked fit and well, basically they were not poorly pups.  They have started to go out in the garden in the run (very well shaded) and she said that together with the heat may have upset one or two of them.  They seem fine today - no more runny poos, in fact I only ever saw one very bad one, and luckily she was the biggest of the litter so able to withstand a little loss in weight for that day!!!  Re the worming issue, I'm not sure why the worming would be an issue, is it because they have a lot of worms, the wormer doesn't agree with them or that they need another dose?  Pups were wormed at 2.5 weeks and 4.5 weeks with Drontal puppy mum was wormed each time as well and I haven't seen any!!   Everyone is back eating now and all very lively - hopefully a storm tonight so that will cool things down a bit.
Thanks Tooolz I will get some ProKokin!

One of the most common causes of runny tummies in pups, especially around 5 weeks, is too much food.  At that age they are getting confident and greedy and will often overeat.  I would reduce the amount that you're giving them and probably feed each of them individually so that you know how much each one is eating.

Thank you WestCoast, that makes perfect sense, she is a little piggy, she is the biggest pup!  I will start to feed them individually but with 11 of them it will take me forever, perhaps I'll seperate them into 3 groups, two groups of 3 and either two 2's or one four.  I will see how it goes!

As you've got a problem I'd seperate them into groups but still give them individual bowls, just so the you can see what they're eating. So to sort them now, if you don't have 11 individual dishes, I'd take one pup out of the room and feed it, then put it into another pen and go through the whole litter until they're all fed.  Once they're sorted maybe you can feed the piggies in one group - when they're finished, they're finished - and the slower ones from another bowl so that they can all be slow together.
When I've been lucky enough to have a big litter (:)) I feed them all together for 2 meals and do 2 feeds individually just to keep some control. :)
