Hi do dogs always have to lock and tie to fall pregnant or can it be a quick thing? and can a dog suffer a phantom pregnancy after already having a litter a year before or do they only occur in bitches who have not had a litter?? quick reply needed thankyou

Yes, bitches can get pregnant from a slip mating, and yes, a bitch can have a phantom pregnancy after any season, whether or not she's had a litter before, or even whether or not she's been mated.

thankyou. the reason  i ask is my bitch was mounted while at the end of her season but only for a couple of seconds. could she fall pregnant from this? does the phantom pregnancy have to occur straight after a season or can the symptoms such as enlarger breasts, increase in appetite etc occur a few weeks later?

Did the dog penetrate at all? Did you notice any fluid coming from her when he got off? If no to both those questions it's very unlikely that she's pregnant.

And the symptoms of a phantom pregnancy can be identical to a real one, and in the same timescale - ie the signs would gradually increase until 9 weeks after the season when the symptoms would be at their most obvious, just at the time when the bitch would whelp if she was genuinely pregnant.

a Phantom can look exactly like a real pregnancy, and will follow all the pregnancy signs and symptoms.

My pup is the result of a accidental mating were the dog and bitch were only together for a couple of moments. There was no tie but 8 pups.

i dont think he penetrated her but cant bge shore. she has had a litter before and her symptoms are very simular. whats the quickest time they can mate for? the last time she fell pregnant they did not lock. she has been sick a few times could this be a sign? she has been spending time with one of her pups from her last litter could this bring on a phantom pregnancy? thanks for ur help

being in season will bring on a phantom.

when did this happen? if in any doubt you can take her to the vet and get a injection to stop the pregnancy. unless of course you want to carry on and have a litter.

If far enough along the vet can scan her to see if any pups but not always reliable

thats the thing i cant remember when it happened. i would not continue the pregnancy given the choice but she looks like she is either too far on or having a phantom. what stage will; they give the injection?

>what stage will; they give the injection?

Alizin is given as two injections, 24 hours apart, up to 45 days after mating.

are there any ways of telling either way without the vet?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 02.06.09 19:50 UTC
Only time will let you know for sure, if you're willing to take the chance.

no not willing lol just my vet is away all week typical if only there was a home test like there there is with humans

The person who invents a simple home canine pregnancy test will become very rich! But it hasn't happened yet, I'm afraid.
