Topic Dog Boards / Health / Phoebie Update re Kennel Cough

Well Phoe is still sneezing on exercise and excitment.

Phoned vet this morning who said he thinks it probably is KC. He says that KC is really any upper respitory infection and this is what she has. It may or may not go to a cough and at this stage he is not going to treat her. I am just to monitor them both and if any change to call again and he'll put her (or both if Sam gets it) on antibiotics. Sam is due a booster but that has been put on hold as not doing him while he is possibly incubating this.
I thought it was viral and therefore antibiotics don't help but apparantly if it is the bordella (sp) strain that is bacterial. While just in her nose and a mild case so far he feels best to leave her alone but I am to be aware of bronchitis and react if it goes to her chest.

I asked when all symptons have gone how long after I should keep them isolated and was gobsmacked by his answer which at the mo I'm not going to post but I have a question of you all. If it was your dog how long after all signs had gone would you be before taking them out again?

I have spoken to the ringcraft class I attend and there have been no reports of any others infected but as Phoe had been kept in due to her season and her one and only outing had been there since it looks likely someone else was a carrier (8 days ago - right incubation period). By the way although that sound cruel I would like to point out the dogs have a fenced in acre here they have access to most of the day. I was concerned about anyone at ringcraft hearing Phoe had it and if they got it blaming me but Phoes breeder helps run it and will put my side of the story forward and tell everyone to be vigilent as someone has probably had it/got it and passed it to her

Look well if it is something else causing it with her and I am taking precautions for nothing but there is no other reason I can find for her sneezing. I'd rather be safe than sorry and pass it on.

We missed 3 shows we'd entered due to season and now looks like I may well miss at least 2 more I had already entered being Little Miss Organised

I also meant to ask if any of you have had KC at yours and you are going somewhere where there are dogs (in my case visiting my Mum) do you do anything to try to make sure you don't carry it? Washed hands etc ???? Can the *bug* live for long on clothes, shoes etc

sara---calm down!!!!---its not like youve introduced the black plague  -everyone in dogs knows we have an incubation and during that time we can be out there infecting others-[without knowing] , its what happens when dogs get together-the only ones to get annoyed ay are the ones that know they have it and still show their dogs-NOT YOU SARA :D

I am calm really Dizzy and I don't blame anyone for giving it to us as I realise that it could be carried before anyone even knew their dog had it :) I'd just hate to be thought of as one of the irresponsible ones who knowingly went out there and passed it on to others as those sort get my goat too :D

I dont know how mine escaped it Saraw , it was rampant here . but the vet gave me nasal vacs for it and it must have done the trick.
Phillipa told me to get baby benylin and give it I did .
I also put that stolkholm tar stuff in lids around the kennels and used parvocide . so after a war on bugs I won . no cough
I believe the stolkholm tar is good to help get rid of it as well
just put some of it in open containers and it is supposed to kill the airborne germs while the fumes allow easy breathing of the lungs.
You will have to have them in kennel though as it stinks. Mari

Sara,
Don't feel like Typhoid Mary, the first time I met kennel cough was when my dogs started coughing on the way back from a show, and I will swear that they had shown no signs until the first cough.
I am now paranoid about it as I felt so guilty to think I had been passing it on, that was about 16 years ago.
It is a really funny thing tho, I have had one dog take it and the rest not and at other times both went down with it. I would not go to a show during the 3 week period you sign for on the declaration if my dogs had been in contact but many people do. Often it is these same people that mutter about others doing the same. I tend to stay away from training for about 3 weeks if I know it is around and would prob wait the same time after my dogs had stopped coughing.
What did your vet say?
I have a friend who swears by homeopathic remedy Drosera if it is about and I have got myself some but thankfully no need to use it yet

Hi sara, hope this little story makes you feel better. Last year I took in a rescue bitch while she whelped, then mum and pups went off to a new home. Because she was due to have pups almost straight away, ( and after they were born) none of my crew went of the premises. When we have new born pups I NEVER go anywhere doggy, not shows, not training, nothing at all. However, when the pups were three weeks old, they, the mum, and all my crew started coughing over a period of a few days. I couldnt work out how we could possible of got it, then I heard that the boarding kennels up the road, about 1/2 a mile away, had had it. So somehow, we had got the germs. So, this must prove to you, that you have done nothing wrong and mustnt feel bad about it, you could have picked it up anywhere. Hope the dogs are OK with it, IF it is KC. May I suggest you give them some Benilyn anyway, just in case?

Hi Phil

It's not so much I feel I've passed it on already as going on incubation period I'd say she picked it up rather than passed it on last time we were in contact with others but it's what I do now to not pass it on to anyone.

As yet we have no cough, just the sneezing so not been giving benilyn as yet. I wouldn't mind so much but Phoe keeps choosing to sneeze in my face when she comes for a cuddle :D

Hi Anne

I suppose as it's the first time I've experienced KC (presuming it is) I don't take it in my stride yet but with time and more bouts ( :( ) it may not seem such a big thing ;)

When I asked my vet what timescale he'd put on taking them out of isolation he said 2 months from the last signs in the last dog in the household  I realise he probably errs on the side of caution and if everyone did this the incidence would maybe be much lower in the country but I know I've heard people say "oh they stopped coughing last week so I've taken them out again"

I want to be responsible and do what's right but I don't want to be a fool either and wait for months when others don't

Have you any advice about what precautions I should take if any before visiting anyone with dogs ? At this rate my Mum won't let me in her house and I'll not get my Christmas pressies lol :D

Thanks, Sara :)
