Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lab with red dots in ears?
- By Gemini05 Date 28.05.09 14:14 UTC
Can anyone help my friend.
Her 1 1/2 Black Lab has over the last couple of days developed little red dots inside his ears, the only time it seems to bother him is in the morning when he gets up and he shakes his head a few times, then carries on with his day, sometimes he will scratch at his ears, again this seems to only happen in the morning.

She has not changed any cleaning products within her house, so I dont know what advice to give her apart from taking him to the vets if it gets worse.
Any advice/experience would be truly grateful thanks :)

It's not mites is it? There are a lot of what we used to call Harvest mites about at the moment so a possibility. I would imagine it is likely to be something in his ears that are biting the ear flaps.

Hi Merlot, yes that what I was thinking, at first I thought she just needed to give the ears a good clean, but when i looked and saw the red dots, I was not totally sure, now if it is mites, can this be home treated or does she need to go to the vets for treatment?

I think a trip to the vet may be in order. Firstly as we do not know what it is and also no doubt it will involve some drops if it's mites. Better safe than sorry. If left to get a firm hold then mites may be hard to get rid off. Better to deal with it sooner I think.

I would suggest a tirp to vets also.. Harvest mites (also known as Chiggers) are generally not around until September/October, and usually killed of with a first frost..

just an update, my friend took her lab to the vets and they believe it to be an allergy of some sort, it is now only in one ear and they have ear drops to give him, not sure if they testing for what he could be allergic to, but ear drops seem to be working :)
