I just think dog breed popularity a very strange thing. there are popular breeds that do not make the easiest of pets, and other breeds that are more suitable for many people that are heading for extinction, or have a very small nucleus of owners and breeders.
Why for instance are Springer Spaniels so popular yet fields with that lovely conker couloured coat are fairly rare?
Why have smooth fox terriers become such a rarity, even at shows, and the ubiqitous jack russel is ever popular, despite some horendous conformation and temperament in quite a number of the ones of my aquaintance!
Why has the large impressive Akita taken root, and the large Swedish Jamthund, a relative of the Elkhound not even arived in the UK. I am told that they have a very laid back temperament even compared to Elkhounds.
A very interesting example is the Leonberger and the Estrela Mountain dog, they look very similar, and can easily be mixed up even for those in doggy circles, yet the Leonberger is enjoying steady rise in numbers in the show world, and the Estrela is languishing?
The two Laphund breeds in the UK the Swedish and Finish. The former came firt I beleive, yet is struggling, The Finns on the other hand are making progress???
Any other examples you can think of??
