Topic Other Boards / Foo / Talking about baby names.......
- By poppity [gb] Date 26.05.09 21:15 UTC
Were you going to be called something else and would you have prefered the other name. What names did you mums think up for your babies and do they like them.My mum and dad were going to call me either Grace or Janet but couldn't decide which so they called me Elizabeth.I've only just got used to it cos to me it sounds a bit posh, which i'm not. They didn't have a boys name thought up because after 4 boys they couldn't think of any!
My girls were going to be Philip James and Peter Nicholas, and my boy Rachel Elizabeth. The girls are not keen on their names,Sarah Lindsey and Catherine(Kate)Jane.I've told them they can call themselves what they like but they haven't changed anything yet.

I was either Roxanne or Russell!  Think I will stick to Roxanne! :-D  (Although named after the subject in the song....Says alot doesn't it... )
- By poppity [gb] Date 26.05.09 22:08 UTC
Do you get called Roxy? For years i was called Liz,but that sounds hard to me and Elizabeth is too posh(but i do like the name, just don't think it suits me).

My family on my dads side are very close, dad asked his neices for name suggestions for me and one suggested her best friends name, which is now mine too, Kerry. I am happy with my name but prefer to be called Ker (pron. Care) as 'Kerry' always makes me feel like I'm going to be told off!!

My mum was raised in a convent and named my sister after the Nun she was the closest to, Sister Jennivieve (sp?), so my sister (LOL) is called Jenny.

My first child is named in memory of our departed grandfathers (one each of mine & OH's gramps) Jack Thomas :) When expecting our second baby we were convinced it was going to be a girl so had no boys names ready. We were stumped when the baby arrived and was a boy, all we could think of that went well with 'Jack' was 'Daniel' (LOL) so he is Daniel Lee, mostly called 'Dan' (unless he's being told off ;) ). My boys like thier names :)
- By poppity [gb] Date 27.05.09 09:37 UTC
Great choices you made for your boys.My boy is called Ian James, his dad was John and his granddad was john and his great granddad was  called John,so we called him Ian cos it means john but doesn't sound like it.The James is after my dad and my late brother.By the way what would you have called a girl?
- By Linz13 [gb] Date 27.05.09 12:32 UTC
Lindsay was the only female name my parents had for me, if I was a boy I was going to be Derek or Graham.  I like my name, most people at work call me Linz, which I don't mind (thats obvious from my user ID I suppose!!)

Bon't have any kids myself but have my names in mind, Finlay James I really like Lauchlan (grandpas middle name was McLauchlan) but it would not go with my surname.  A girl would be Niamh (Neve).

>Do you get called Roxy?

Sometimes. My Mum never liked Roxy so no-one ever did while I was growing up.  Afew people do these days but mosty it's shorted to Rox, again my mum never liked but I don't mind and so many people like to shorten names! :-D
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 27.05.09 17:04 UTC
You could have opted for Libby as an alternative ot Elizabeth or Liz

I would have been Reece if i was a boy. Mum wanted to name my sister with my name but nobody liked it :-(  6 years later Mum decided she was having it and i got given the name nobody liked originally :-)  It was either that or Dorothy so im glad my parents chose what they did.

On the subject of names do you live up to the meaning of your name?? I definatly do!!
- By Astarte Date 27.05.09 18:01 UTC

> Elizabeth is too posh(but i do like the name, just don't think it suits me)

ditto myself and Kimberley, i am definately just a Kim or Kimmi :)

I was going to be Luke if i was a boy.

> On the subject of names do you live up to the meaning of your name?? I definatly do!!

Well, my dad really wanted to call me Melissa he really loved that name but my mum wanted McKala they couldn't agree so in the end my two grandmothers came to the rescue and combined their names Jenny and Anna and came up with Jenna, they liked it and the rest is history. :-) I always promised my dad that if I had a daughter I would call her Melissa, but alas I had sons and so one of my brothers named his daugther Melissa instead, though we all call her Melli.

If I'd been a boy it would have been David, with a few more brothers on the way after myself the name got used anyway. :-)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.05.09 19:53 UTC

>mum wanted McKala

That's very unusual! Is it pronounced the same as Michaela?
- By Carrington Date 27.05.09 20:10 UTC
Yes, exactly the same just spelt differently. Imagine having to go through life with people thinking I was spelling my name wrong. :-D It came from a school pal of my mums who passed away, no idea where the spelling originates. Luckily I didn't get the name so didn't have to cross those bridges. :-)

Well I'm a Rachel Elizabeth......but I'm a girl ;-)
- By Setters4me [gb] Date 27.05.09 20:52 UTC
I too would have been called Russell, which I don't like personally! but then again I've never been that keen on Sarah!!!
If Christian had been a girl, he would have been Madeline but if we do go onto have another baby and its a girl, I have a different name planned!!
- By poppity [gb] Date 27.05.09 21:45 UTC

> Well I'm a Rachel Elizabeth......

What a great name!:)

> but I'm a girl

That was lucky then:)

I didn't know for years that it was short for Elizabeth.I thought about calling myself Lizbeth, but the only time i tried, the woman assumed i'd said elizabeth and wrote that down!My junior school headmaster called me Betty, but i'm not a Betty either.John called me Lizzie or Lizza which no-one else did. While we're on the subject of names, isn't it funny that the short version of some names is the same length, like Jack for John or Jimmy for James.
- By Donnax [gb] Date 31.05.09 21:51 UTC
Im just Donna but usually known as Don or Donzy (to a few! grrr!) My mom wanted to  call me Donna Maria but my dad thought it sounded too biblical, so its just Donna. Never did get to find out what i would of been called had i have been a boy..
My daughter is Chanelle Abbey, aka Nellie (by me) or elle (by her friends)
My Grandaugher is Daisy mae aka Mishy mae (by me) or Daize by some...

Donna x
(and my boysxx)

I was going to be Russell or Amanda Jane, in fact some of my christening cards were addressed to Amanda Jane.  I ended up with Wendy.  I do wonder if my personality would be different if I had been Amanda Jane.  Probably if I had been called Russell!
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 01.06.09 12:41 UTC
I was going to be a Benjiman if i was a boy.

My OH sister is called elizabeth and he calls her beth, or their little cousins call her lillybeth.

For my 3 future children lol i like tristan, issac or zachary, cameron unisex, dexter, imogen, noah, jasmine, and farrah

Louise
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.06.09 12:43 UTC

>cameron unisex

You'd call a child Unisex? That's on a par with Moon Unit and Apple!
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 01.06.09 12:50 UTC
no lol

i meant for both boy and a girl
- By Whistler [gb] Date 01.06.09 13:16 UTC
LOL like Unisex!!
Im Vivienne Anne my cousin was Lesley vivienne and my Dad liked the name, hardly anyone spells it right.

My sons are Benjamin Bryan and Samuel Martyn.

Brian is my Dad and Martin my younger brother that died early, if I had anymore it would have been a Joseph or Thomas.  I like names that can be shortened, Benjamin has always been Ben, Samuel is Sam to most people but Samuel to me!!!

I like Lauren for a girl (Samuel) and Victoria for a girl (Benjamin) but nature knew best.

Mum wanted to call me Susan so I guess Vivienne is ok but it has always been Viv to friends Vivienne when Im being told off and Annie to my Dad!!
- By poppity [gb] Date 01.06.09 22:11 UTC
everyone has a being told off name don't they, which is usually their "sunday"name too.Talking about shortening names,my three are Kate, for Catherine, which is normal, but Sarah we call Say,and Ian we call E.We often call him Our Id instead of Our Kid.It would take too long to explain that one :)

> Imagine having to go through life with people thinking I was spelling my name wrong.

That just brought back a flash from the past!

I went to a very strict school, where we had to call teachers Madam.  When asked what my father's name was I said Robbie.  I was ridiculed in front of the class for not saying Robert!

I was too scared to be insistent!  He was actually christened Robbie, and I didn't have the nerve to argue.  :-o
- By poppity [gb] Date 01.06.09 23:40 UTC
Cor blimey,I bet you were glad on leaving day! :) I just had a thought,if there was an Adam in school,he would have been able to say, excuse me madam,i'm adam.:)
- By Whistler [gb] Date 02.06.09 06:58 UTC
My Nan called her son TONY and spent a lifetime telling people his name was not Anthony it was TONY.
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 02.06.09 11:15 UTC
My Mum if Jill Not Gill Or Gillian. Pople still get it wrong - even those who have known her  long time.
- By Masonsmum [gb] Date 02.06.09 12:24 UTC
My brother is Harry and i think if he was a girl my mum wanted to call him Yanice, hehe! I wanted to call him Jesus (i was 4 years old) and did so, as im told, until he was a few months old. Coming from a not particulary religious family this didnt go down too well :)
He now often gets called H, Harry the B*sterd, Harry the Horrible, Harold the Great...

My sister is Jennifer Maddison Florence, But my mum liked Maddison better so she has always been known by that name. Im Victoria Jane which i think is far too posh for me!!
- By poppity [gb] Date 02.06.09 16:14 UTC
That's so funny about baby Jesus.:)

Talking about correcting people,John's surname was Illston and he'd get letters with Hiltone,Illiston,Hilston and everything in between except the right way.I changed my name by deedpoll after he died and now I have to keep telling people that I've not dropped the aitch,it starts with an I not an aitch. That's what you get for having Viking ancestors!
- By chelzeagirl [gb] Date 02.06.09 18:12 UTC
my 21 year old son was going to be Frank , all the cards i recived and i still have them some say to Anita and baby Frankie, he was being called baby frankie by the nurses while i was in hospital then we were deciding on a middle name and his dad wanted his son to have his own middle name which is Bruno :-o
so i ended up given our son his dads first name instead which is Jean only i spell it Gene, didnt end up using the Bruno middle name either we went with Gene Carl,
my cousin has a baby girl last year named her Summer, and her son Riley ,i think they sound odd,
a friend as a kid has 5 siblings they were Joe ,Jason, Kim , kelly, Dean and Darren, we all used to think it was so cool when we were kids, lol,
- By chelzeagirl [gb] Date 02.06.09 18:22 UTC
oh the funiest thing is my mum wanted to call me JEAN after her sister dad wanted Anita, so they called me Anita Jean, then mum and dad split when i was 2 and mum just called my Jean (still does) only time i was called Anita was at school and by friend but all my mums friends and my Aunt call me Jean my cousin calls me Anita and i have spent my whole life explaining to people who no me as Anita Why my mum calls me Jean ARrrrrrrrrr lol then i met my first OH Jean Bruno, and we had Gene carl like it cant get any more confusing Right! :-D,

unless you want to talk about Birthdays lol, i was born on my mums , Jean bruno was born on my Aunts , and Gene carl was born on my Dads lol ,

- By poppity [gb] Date 05.06.09 17:21 UTC
I really like the name Shelly,it sounds friendly to me.Have you noticed how when you think of some names you immediately have an idea of what they're like?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.06.09 17:35 UTC

>I really like the name Shelly,it sounds friendly to me.

My best friend's name is Shelley - we've been great friends for about 25 years. :-) And another friend who's really a Michelle but is often called Shelley. She's nice too. :-)

I've recently met another Shelley as well, and she's horrible. :-(
- By newf3 [gb] Date 05.06.09 17:38 UTC
