So i got a message from mum this morning saying she was in hospital after having an op on her hand following being bitten by a dog.

turns out that yesterday there was a stray dog running about their area that mum and dad agreed to take in till the dog warden could be called. it seemed friendly but then after a while it attacked our youngest Keeper (who is absolutely fine), when mum was breaking it up the dog bit her hand.

the silly sausage decided to leave visiting a+e and just get the guys at her work (shes a nurse) to have a look when she went in. however it swelled hugely and she needed to get it surgically cleaned out.

shes ok but i thought i would put it on as a cautionary tale- always get such things checked!

Ouch, your poor Mum.Seems really drastic that she needs surgery to get it cleaned out. Hope she makes a speedy recovery

When two of my dogs got into a scrap and Dad got bitten the vet was much more concerned about him than either dog. Insisted on writing him a letter to take to A&E

Poor mum hope shes feeling better now.  Bites in general dog or otherwise can be awful I have had 2 serious bites from cats both not mine and one of them was seriously injured and I was trying to take it to the vet. In both cases I ended up with more than 1 visit to a and e tetnus and penicillian injections in my bum and needed a week off work.
Just to rub it in further I passed out during the penicillian injection in my bum ! not something I have ever had problems with before.A&e told me it could have been worse it could have been humans  apparently they do even more damage !! great i shall avoid that happening

Glad your mum is ok.

My mum got bit by her cat last year and i told her to get straight to hospital as cat bites are really nasty but no, then 4 days later she needed surgery to save her hand the surgeon said! Took months to heal and she was in agony for weeks.

last month two of my dogs had a disagreement and my mum tried to protect one from the other and got bit in the same hand!!!
This time i didnt tell her to go to hospital i put her in the car and took her minutes after the bite, she has healed well with no probs but as you say bites can be very serious and should always be looked at immediately.

Thats the thanks your mum got for trying to help....hope she heals with no problems :)

Glad your mum and Keeper are OK. That's good advice to get things checked, it's all too tempting to put it off if it doesn't seem bad.

Aren't some people awful!

apparently it was chained outside but some of the local kids wander in to talk to it. the teenage daughter was supposed to be watching it and wasn't even looking for it.

can only shake my head in despair...
