Topic Dog Boards / Health / We're off to the vets again :-(

I knew everything was going too well - Pip's all settled on the AG sensitive and been doing lovely poos (sorry!) but I've noticed this last 10 days or so she's been eating a lot of grass.  This past couple of days when I let her out for her 1st morning wee she bolts across the garden straight to the grass and eats it for a few minutes.  Today she was barking/whining to go out and when I let her out she went to the grass and after a while did a normal poo BUT after 10 mins or so came rushing back out again and did a really soft poo followed by horrible liquidy stuff.

She's obviously not right so I've called the vets and asked their advice and as it's a bank holiday weekend I'm taking her up at 12 today for a check over.  I really hope we're not back to square 1 again with her tummy as we've had such problems.

I love her dearly, but she's costing me so much at the moment - good job she's a cutie!!!

I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi there, wishing you luck for your appointment today.

My girls eat grassy stuff occasionally,  I think it is the fresh shoots that they like.  Maybe a bit like us, too much of something can be a bit bad for you??

At this time of year my dogs graze constantly on new grass and it isn't something I worry about :-)

Perhaps I'm over reacting but I'd rather be safe than sorry!  I bet you can tell she's my first dog can't you ;o)

Nope, you are IMO right to be watchful and concerned. If your dog only ever nibbled grass off a chemical-free patch of lawn, it wouldn't matter, but how many of us can guarantee that? Out of interest I've just had a quick look at some of the weed killing/moss killing products people can buy and their listed ingredients. The container may well say safe for garden use, etc., but read the toxicology reports for the individual ingredients, consider how very little we know about the effects of chemicals in combination with each other over time and think again about grazing dogs or indeed exposure to any unnecessary additives in foods.

Well, Pip's back on antibiotics again - the vet says colitis is a very loose term for IBD and she feels that's what Pip has got judging by her symptons.  She feels Pip has been eating grass to that extent to soothe her tummy.  She's certainly sore around her tummy when the vet had a good feel.

This has been happening a lot, the vet says if it happens again soon we need to think about taking it further and having biopsies etc done to get a proper diagnosis and then maybe long term medication.  Obviously it's best if she only has a flare up every 6 months or so, in which case I can cope with it, but at the moment it seems to be every month or so.  Of course medication has side effects so it's not the immediate answer.

She suggested putting a muzzle on her when out so she can't scavenge and shutting Pip in her crate when we eat (which I do already).  Sam, my 2yo, is happy to feed Sam unsuitable food, so we'll have to watch him like a hawk.  I'm to carry on with the AG sensitive food as it's a good food, and hopefully this can be resolved without resorting to further tests; but obviously if they're needed that's what we'll do.

Hi. Sorry to hear that Pip's had a little set back. Just a thought, how much Arden Grange are you feeding? The reason I ask is because I found when I fed AG that if I fed any more than my boys needed (which was still well within AG's recommended amounts) My boys got dire rear. I eventually found the correct amount which was actually less than their lowest recommended amount and my boys still struggled with their weight (both neutered which is probably why). See how Pip goes but don't rule out the fact that just because AG sensitive is a good food (which it clearly is) it will agree with Pip - whats good for one dog is no good for the next.

Edited to add: My boys are like a couple of goats at the moment - all they seem to do is eat grass but thankfully we have no ill effects.
