Is anybody treating their dog with drops for Glaucoma. My Welsh Springer had to have an eye removed in April 2008 after she lost her sight due to this condition. The other eye is being treated but everything that I have read on the subject tells me that eventually she could lose her sight in the remaining eye. No one can predict the time frame for this which is worrying, so it helps to share others experiences and types of treatments. Words of wisdom, please.

I am teating Tiva with drops in her eyes- I have a post on here- not sure if its that or a tumor. The left eye is really bad and the right is starting- both eyes have cateracts more so in the left then the right- Her right eye is kinda bulging from pressure and since I have put BNPH every 8 hrs in her eye has brought down the pressure and the blue has kinda gone away- can now actually see some eye- the vet was actually able to do better tests on her eye. I now have her on Diopred every 8 hrs in left eye and once a day in the right- if this doesn't work then its stronger drops which is more costly I have been told- but she still has sight reason for the drops. We were told glaucoma is very painful but if the dog has sight in the eye they don't like to remove it- but she is borderline with it being that or a tumor. My vet will be calling the specialist and see what she can tell me tomorrow on why she has so much pressure causing her eye to bulge (drops have relieved this pressure)- hubby and I have talked about it cause it will eventually affect both eyes so if we need to do eye removal then we will pts- if she just gradually goes blind from cateracts then she can still live a happy life- if it is prob a tumor- or in pain then we will pts. Tiva will be 11yrs old but for now we are doing what we can for her- she has also went from 11.7pounds to 11.1 pounds with in like 3 weeks so not sure if that is because she is in pain or because she is out playing fetch more due to the warmer weather- so am watching her eating habbits which do seem to be good still...

Best of luck with your girl :-)

Hi

It has been a few years since i had my dog who had glaucoma( sadly not with us now , not because of the Glaucoma)

She was diagnoised with this atthe age of 5 yrs old and had it in both eyes, she was treated with eye drops for a few months and i brough her a harness as the vet recomended this as it would help with the pressure and pain.....After a few months she had one eye reoved and the vet stated she was blind in the other.....amazing has it is she regained the most slightest bit of site in her remaining eye ...prob shadows but enough to see the post man

There is an expert who is dealing with the alot and i think his name is peter bedford?

I do belive that if you keep the pressure down and with treatment that it can delay this process , sadly for ours we did not catch it till late but having the worsed eye removed which the pressure was so high seemed to help the remaining eye

I hope yours contines to improve , i no i was devasted when she had her eye removed but soon got used to eat

(sorry about spelling but just lost my dog and not sleeping hence my bad typing)

Thanks so much for your replies. Sorry to hear about Phoebe. I have been able to correspond with Peter Bedford by email and am lucky as my vet is an opthalmic expert. It is a constant worry though, although everthing I have read suggests she will do OK with no sight...heres hoping thats a long way off.

Hi

Just to add also when mine had er eye removed , she still managed to enjoy her walks over the field , her senses seemed to improve though being from the hound line i think this helped also i noticed her whiskers had grown---they were so long

All the best
