as some of you know yoko severed her tendon and artery a few weeks back, which healed lovely but whilst she was bandaged her dew claw got a small infection as no air was getting to it, so last thurs she was given 5 days of antibiotics. it got worse sat to sunday night almost as if the flesh on the dew claw was being eaten away. i just had this feeling...... so she went in and they said what i had guessed, they have a strong suspicion its mrsa and a swab has ben sent away for confirmation.
so know we are not allowed back to the vets unless an emergency and if its confirmed the vet has to come out to see us!!
the claw itself hasnt seemed to bother her but she didnt eat her breakfast today so must be feeling run down. i feel so sorry for her she's been ever so patient with all the vet visits and she doesnt deserve this.
it will be confirmed in 3-5 days so fingers crossed

anybody with similar experiences of mrsa within animals?

yeh, i think its just hit me to be honest, feel absolutely wrung out and distraught.
when i have been reading up on it it says most of the pet cases of mrsa are passed on to them by humans.

No don't know about it in animals, but I would think, like us it lays dormant inside our noses etc. so can affect any animal also?????

I met a guy last year while out with the dog who had a GR who had injured a front leg. The dog got MRSA in it's leg, no idea what the treatment involved or how long it took but the dog had had a skin graft to the wound which had healed beautifully. The dog made a complete recovery and was bouncing around like any other dog.

mahonc,
mrsa is the same in anyone, my son in law had it, (he was in a car accident. in the back seat had very bad head injury, is now pvs) As you may know it is caused by bad hygiene during surgery. My daughter used to scrub him down twice a day with antibacterial wash. Also he was taking antibiotics. She got ride of it!! I would put gloves on, warm water, antibacterial wash and soak and wash it as much as you can.
They do barrier nurse, anyone that has it. Keep at it!!!!

Do hope she's better soon. i never realised dogs could get this from humans.

My understanding of MRSA is that it is not necessarily due to bad hygiene during surgery at all as it can be carried in  our nostrils and on our skin. If someone is admitted for surgery who already carries MRSA on the skin, when the skin is cut the risk of it getting into the blood stream is obviously pretty high, surgeon's gloves/instruments touching the skin and then blood vessels/organs.

Here's a link to some information

yes your right this was not anything to do with surgery, i know this as the incubation period is 1-10 days and this happened 3 weeks later almost. the most common way for dogs to catch it apparantly is from humans, as you can be a healthy carrier and not know. i think it may be my o.h as his sister works in a hospital.
