Topic Dog Boards / General / Vacuum Cleaners
- By Mairi [gb] Date 30.05.01 21:07 UTC
I'm looking for advice from dog owners or animal owners for that matter as to what a good vacuum cleaner is for picking up dog hair. I know that the Dyson DC05 is out at the moment and there is an advertisement every month in Dog Today for Miele Dog & Cat hoover. Any advice on any good products will be much appreciated.
Thanks in Advance

We had a Miele cats and dogs and although it was o/k it doesn’t hold a candle to the Dyson. We have the DC04 which I believe is a little cheaper than the DC05 but believe me, it picks up dirt and hairs!!!!

I agree the Dyson is wonderful.

Got to say though first time I used one it was rather frightiening the amount of dust and dog hair that came out of the carpet.

The DC04 is a much better machine for doggy hairs than the DC05. The new version was designed for the Japanese market so is smaller. With 8 dogs at home the Dyson was certainly the best investment we ever made!!!
Advice about the models is from people working at Dyson, so get the DC04 if you can!!!

I agree that the Dyson is wonderful, easy to use and does the job.

Is the DCO5 the one with the "turbobrush"? The little cyllinder one? I was considering getting one as I think that is the one that they sell specifically for picking up dog and cat hair?

Can someone confirm if I'm right or not?!

We've got an upright which I think is DCO4, must go and check.

Anyone got the turbobrush model?
- By Claire [gb] Date 31.05.01 22:03 UTC
I HAve The Dyson DC05 Turbo brush and it is amazing how much hair and dirt it lifts even when the floors look clean, and there is absolutley no smell (not like the ordinary cleaners)
I Must say if the washing amchine is anywhwere near as good i will buy one of them tooo.

I still have my most basic original dyson & can't imagine life without it....its excellent!
- By Mairi [eu] Date 31.05.01 08:05 UTC
I thought the DC05 was specifically for Dog and Cat Hairs.

The people who have dyson's - are they uprights or the pull along type.?? Also there are so many different DC04's any model numbers for me please.

Thanks a million for all your replies, I'm going to go for Dyson I reckon, just getting more info.

We have a Kirby and it is brilliant at getting hair off the carpet. Our GSD and Bernese moult really badly, especially in the Summer.

Hi, It looks like the Dyson is the favourite but I've never had one as I am perfectly happy with my Panasonic pull along. Its the 2nd one I've had, the last one lasted 10years, and with several dogs, thats quite a feat. It picks up everything really well. Its a few years old now so its probably not available any more , but cost around £120, I think it was the second from the top of the range, if you see what I mean. Happy hoovering!

Hi! I have a Henry Numatic Turbocare which is brill. but I haven't ever seen another one! Much more effective, however, is a Yellotop sweeping brush. You can buy them from Kakeland plastics * or QVC. They are cheaper from QVC as a rule.I also have a sort of sponge which is good for upholstery. Rubber gloves aren't bad either!
*Freudian slip? I meant Lakeland but I'm sure you had already worked that out for yourself!

What an advert for the Dyson! - with 3 dogs, 2 cats and 4 filthy boys my Dyson works a treat. I'd always have another (Dyson I mean!).

It's the Absolute model / upright

Hi!

I have a Dyson upright, the basic one I think (purple and yellow) and I think it's great. It did the job perfectly when Laska was moulting and should it get blocked it's easy to find any blockages and remove them safely and QUICKLY saving you unscrewing the machine to bits and so on.

I must say that i do prefer the uprights as the others hurt my back for some reason, and they really clean!!!! It lifts the carpet off the lining the suction is so strong. You haven't got the expence of those blasted hoover bags either!

Perhaps Dyson should make an advert about dog owners and their Dysons? I have only ever heard good publicity about them!

Regards

Sofia :)

How often does your dyson get blocked?  I'm nervous about buying a vacuum cleaner that cost so much money that I know nothing about.  Also, would you know if the new model, DC07 Animal is any better than the older versions?
- By signer [gb] Date 03.06.01 12:09 UTC
i would not part with my dyson for anything or one its like part of the family best thing out.....
- By pap [us] Date 02.01.06 20:23 UTC
I've heard that bagless vacuum cleaners are not good at all b/c they spew dust out into the hair, do you have problems with the dyson?
- By justlou Date 02.01.06 20:43 UTC
Pap :-) This thread is nearly 5 years old :-D
- By ridgielover Date 02.01.06 20:49 UTC
Hi Pap
I have had several Dysons.  They are not very robust, don't seem to last very long, but they do clean well and are simple to empty.  I can fill it just by hoovering downstairs, but I do have 6 dogs.  Mine does get blocked fairly often (my Australian Shepherd's hair mainly) and the brushes need to be dehaired fairly often, but it is quite simple to unblock it.
Hope that helps.
I don't find that it spits dust out.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 02.01.06 20:53 UTC
Didn't know that you have an Aussie :) I have one as well :) I've had Dyson's for seven years and never had a problem with them being blocked  Both of mine are still going strong  - not had any problems with them at all (both are uprights) :)

We'll have to do a count of the number of Aussies on the Board - I'll start - 4 - 3 black tris, 1 blue merle :D

(and 2 labs, 1 lab? puppy AND a dyson) :D :D :D

Hi Lokis mum
I have a red tri Aussie - Meg, she's nearly 8 and is a little sweetheart.  A totally different kettle of fish to the RRs, which I've had for over 20 years now.  My first dog was a collie cross and I got Meg as a sort of replacement.  She is, as usual, lying down on my foot, as I type.  One day I'll get a merle.

I have a Dyson (DC04) which copes fine when my Mals blow their coats :)

Oh and another Aussie here - Blue Merle :)
- By Daisy [gb] Date 02.01.06 22:10 UTC
My little darling is Tara who's 3 and a black-tri :)

i'm another dyson advocate. I've one for years. I currently have the DC08 cylinder, and it works fantastically on laminate (which nearly all my house is), and carpet-and the hair encursted car boot, too! I've never had any bother with either of mine, and my old one was the first one they brought out!
