Hi I wondered if any one can offer any advise...?

I have a bitch, this will be her third and final litter and has never done this before. She was mated on day nine of her season and always still bleeds for a couple of weeks after (regardless of being mated) She is 23 days today from day one of mating, yesterday I noticed some discharge a browny red colour. No smell. She is well still after food not overly drinking playing with the others and keen to go for a walk.

So I take her to the vets today as I was concerned, they took her temp normal, they felt that it would be best to scan her to check for pyo, nope there was no swelling, she was given a course of antibiotics and I was told to keep an eye on her for any change. They also suggested she could be aborting her babies as they couldnt see anything on the scan.

Can any one shed any light or offer advise or help any thing would be much appreciated

A very worried mother x

It may be that it was just to early to see anything on the scan, I think that they dont even implant until day 20, I know that they are free floating until about day 15-18 so dont give up hope. The antibiotics should provide her with cover against most things that could have been brewing, the fact that she doesnt have a temp is good as it is the bodies natural defence to infection, which would seem to indicate that there is none present.
I know that I have seen a previous similar post, I hope that the poster sees this and pops on to answer!
Fingers crossed that everything is ok.

A small amount of reddish/brownish, non smelly discharge around 21 days after mating, is a good sign. It's a sign of the embryos implanting on the walls of the uterus. Nothing to worry about, if it's only a small amount, the bitch is well with no signs of infection. Nausea sometimes comes wirth the implantation, but not always.
At that early stage, you will not see any pups on a scan, so don't worry.
Good luck,
Karen

Many thanks for your posts it really does help.

I have to say she is so clean I really wouldnt know how long this discharge has been going on, it was only that she wiggled her bum on the floor in front of the stair gate that I noticed some staining. I keep dabing to check to see how much she is loosing and its not a great deal.... Good sign?

Panicked a little last night as I thought she was drinking and weeing lots rang the vets 24 for advise.... they forgot to ring back, some vets they are!!

She seems brighter this morning not overly drinking and screamed for her breakfast! I'm going to keep a close eye on her for the next couple of days, a friend suggested that she could be aborting some of the pups because she is holding to many..... could this be true?

Many thanks again for your posts it really has helped, any further advise please do let me know xx

One of my girls, my smallest of the lot, always does this, I also believe it's because she probably starts off with more pups than she can cope with, but both times she has ended with a nice litter of 6.  This has happened between 3 & 4 weeks each time.
