Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / What bones are ok for dog?

Hiya I was wandering what bones are ok for a dog to have and should they be raw or cooked? My Gran always told me to never give chicken bones to the dog because they could splinter and spike the throat and gut but I've recently noticed a few people on the forum mention they feed chicken wings/carcass to their dogs so is the chicken bone thing a myth?

You will get differing opinions, but raw bones are softer than cooked ones & cooked chicken(or any other) bones become brittle which is why they should never be given to dogs(or cats)

If you want recreational bones the raw leg bones of cattle are fine, if you use marrow bones you should remove some of the marrow as it can produce loose motions in some dogs.

I've fed all manner of bones to my dogs & never had a problem in the 50 odd years I have had dogs

raw bones are fine and chicken wings for example are a tasty treat that your dog with probably love :)

NEVER EVER EVER FEED COOKED BONES (for yourself and other internet land readers :))

for recreation our lot have always loved a big bit of cow leg from the butchers and it keeps them happy and quiet for hours :) (bit messy though)

bones can be dangerous, its a pointy thing after all, but dogs are designed to deal with them as part of their diet. you will hear horror stories but they are rare and often a result of cooked bones.

bones also have tonnes of benefits other than fun for your dog. they are terrific for keeping teeth clean and work all manner of muscles in the face, neck, chest and legs while being eaten.

hth :)

My dogs all do have good teeth, but they have bones regular. I personally would not feed raw meat to my dogs as they live in our home and there are a lot of children and babies.
I would personally never feed chicken bones cooked or raw. All my dogs have the calcium meat filled bones. My older dogs have the roasted knuckle bones. They have pigs ears, pigs snouts. bulls pizas (dryed bulls willies) Large hide knots. A lot depends on your dog. Some swollow everythink whole others chew! puppies have the meat filled bones and raw hide bones, but I always remove the last bit of the raw hide bones.
I once brought a very large knuckle bone with loads of meat on from the meat market. Offered it to my mainman, he smelt it licked it and walked away I then cooked it and he chewed on it until I decided to throw it away.
