Try to find a ringcraft class nearby and go and do the training nights.
This will let you and your dog know what to expect and you will meet local doggy people who will let you know when you are ready for an Open show and help you find suitable ones to try.
The Kennel Ckub will send you a list of classes.

They will also know of companion shows in your area, which are a great way to start, nobody will expect you to be an expert there, and there are fun classes as well as pedigree ones.
