Topic Dog Boards / General / Newfie coat. This may be a daft question
- By Gray C [gb] Date 17.05.09 10:34 UTC
We have a black Newfie aged 19 weeks.  Just lately we have noticed the odd small brown patch and his coat seems to have a hint of brown in it.  Could it be he is changing from black to brown or is this normal as it is his puppy coat?  His nose is black, so I reckon he should be black.

Daft question or not, I thought I would ask if anyone else has noticed something similar in their dog.  As a matter of interest his mother is brown, but not sure if the sire black or brown.

Just the change of puppy coat to adulthood, but in reality many black breeds have a tinge of brown in them.

They don't change colour.  You may be seeing the beginnings of his adult coat starting to ome thorough or it could just be his undercoat showing through.  Some blacks dogs do have a brownish tinge to their coats, others will get reddish brown tints from being out in the sunshine/swimming in the sea etc but they are still black.

Thanks.  I thought it might have been his puppy coat but just wanted to make sure.  As a matter of interest we got a "white" snow leopard kitten 2 years ago and he has gradually changed colour to a fawn/beige colour, so i was just wondering lol

you may also find that in the Summer, when they're out in the sunshine it will make the coat turn lighter to more brown tinges too...just as it does our own hair!

I'm not sure on the whole gentics in Newfs but I know is australian shepherds you could have black tri's who would have a redish/brown tinge in their undercoat which who imply they carried the red gene.  Our boy has it.  His father was a red tri. When he produced a litter to a blue merle they had all 4 colours within the puppies.

Hi Gray c and welcome to the board.

Yes as everyone has already said it is most likely puppy coat changing to adult coat or dead coat coming out.
My 7 Month old girl still has brown tinges on her puppy coat and she comes from a long line of blacks.
Nothing to worry about.
