Topic Dog Boards / Health / Help!!! I need advice on anaesthetic

Hello Everyone

I desperately need some advice.

Max (our 7 month old bulldog puppy) is absolutely gorgeous who we love to pieces but he has suddenly developed a lump type spot below his eye within the fold.  We took him to the vets on Wednesday and they told us it could be a tumour of some description.  The vet said to keep an eye on it for 2 weeks as it may go, if it hasn't she advised it would be a smallish operation under anaesthetic.  I've been reading on the internet that bulldogs generally don't react well to anaesthetic and wondered if you had any advice as to how much anaesthetic Max should be under, if you could recommend a bulldog specialist vet or knew someone who might be able to help us?

I'm not totally confident on our vets capabilities as there is so much information on the internet advising that the vet should be specialised with bulldogs.  We live in Sheffield can anyone recommend a good vet?

Thank you

I'm sure i saw a program on telly a while ago with two bull dog puppies  who had these lumps on their bottom eye lid and the vet said this was a very common problem with bull dogs. can't remember what it was, maybe something to do with the tear duct. I know they were operated on and everything was fine. The program may of been pet rescue.
i would ask another vet for their opinion before doing anything.
good luck.

Bear, what you describe sounds like 'cherry eye';  luandben's dog's lump is (if I understand correctly) in a fold of skin on its face.

May well be, all i know is it was very easy to deal with.
thanks

It might be worth discussing with your vet whether they think it is one of these, whether they might be able to do a needle aspirate (suck some cells out with a needle - doesn't always give a result but can be done awake if the dog is calm) - don't know how close to the eye the lump is though, that might not be possible - and the risks of waiting a bit longer to see if it goes down (in case it is something else that would be better removed quickly, eg http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/mct.htm ) versus the risks of an anaesthetic in a bulldog.

Any help? Sorry, can't recommend specific bulldog vets, don't know any per se - think the Bulldog Club's list are ones people have used and recommended - so maybe if you're not happy with yours you could try another local one and explain your concerns. :-)

we had a bulldog a few years ago and he develoved a lump on the inner corner of one of his eyes, underneath the membrane, very red in colouration. It turned out to be cherry eye which is very common in bulldogs and breeds of dog which have droopy eyes.

This may not be what your bulldog has but if it is it isn't anything to get too concerned about as is easily fixed wth a small operation, typical of our boy too pretty soon after that one the other eye went!  Our bulldog was fine under the anaesthetic but I do understand your worry.

Hope all goes well.
