Sorry if this is not in the right section but I'm looking into getting my bitch hip and elbow scored around about august, and i was wondering if you have the hips and elbows done the same time or on separate occasions.

Can i be really nosey and ask how much you all payed for the both ? :)
 

I only do hips but if i was to do both i would have them done at the same time as i would only want to put my dog under once. Less risk and less stress for the dog to get it all done in one hit.

if you get both done at same time you will only have to have and pay for one GA....better for your dog and better for your pocket!

I have always had both done at the same time, under one GA.. My most recent plates were done in December/Jan (can't remember exactly) and cost was £180 including BVA Fee

Last time I did both the cost was around £350. Don't forget it will take several weeks for the results to come back so if you do them in August might not have results until October or so.

Before you do proceed, ask around to ensure you get a vet who takes a good plate.  An inexperienced vet can make a significant difference to the quality of the x-rays and the final scores.

I had a bitch done under GA 2 1/2 years ago, doing both sets at the same time. It cost me £250.

I had both done together last year and the cost was £150 for the plates + BVA costs.

I had both done last year under sedation for £170.
My vets were charging over £300 for both under GA

There is a bit of a debate as to whether you should have it done under sedation or GA. At the end of the day the choice is yours..

Well I don't think the panel is sitting more frequently, it's just if you happen to get your plates in just when they're about to meet, or if you're unlucky and the plates arrive the day after or so. :) A dog I bred took 8 weeks just recently.

Certainly last summer I was advised they were now sitting weekly.  The fact that some people are getting their results back within a fortnight - which I believe was previously unheard of, indicates they are clearly sitting more frequently than they used to.

My first scores took 8 weeks to come back, my second lot 7 weeks, and the last lot just 3

Great if they do :) , but the bitch I just mentioned was x-rayed in Feb and results came through in April so pretty recent.

I recently had 3 dogs scored and 2 took 5 weeks and the other 3 weeks so i think it is complete luck on the timing of the xrays, mine were scored in march and i just got them back.

I have had 2 hip scored in that time the first was xrayed end of February and came back 3 weeks later then the other was xrayed end of March and his plates were read 22 April so the hip scoring you mentioned Marianne seems to be a strange timescale if all things such as own vet and post were as efficient as they could be

i have got a very experienced vet that also does plates for my mentor and many other friends, but as they dont do elbows i dont know if he'll be any different on elbow scoring, or is it basically the same ?

the timing of the results coming back wont make any difference to me as i dont intend on breeding from her for a couple of years, if all goes well :)

I just thought I would mention I had my dog's elbow and hips down on Sunday under sedation by Marylin Baker at Eastleigh near Southampton went very well dog recovered in no time and was able to see the x-rays if she is not happy she will do them again while your there no extra charge. It cost £50 hips, £60 elbows + £75 BVA

That woman is a saviour in my mind.. Its where i went and everyone i know in the area goes there as well.

Do you mean on the quality of the plate or the likely score?  It is no help to the breed if people do not provide this information if it is the latter.  For a responsible breeder I would say it is a must.

If the hips are poor they should still be submitted & if she is a good radiographer the plates should be good or redone & then submitted. Nothing is gained by X raying poor hips & not submitting them as it leads to misleading statistics

Well I wouldn't be happy if she doesn't send off the bad with the good!  Witholding bad hips does not give a true story for a breed.
