Hi, my pup has been picking about at his food for the last 2/3days, but today he seemed fine in his self but was sick midday and has since developed diarrhea. I have gave him some chicken and rice but it is going straight thru him, So do I now starve him for 24hrs? I have been making sure he has water and have been giving him ice cubes as he is teething - Could this be connected as I remember when my children were babies and cutting teeth they had " nasty nappies " :( He is feeling very sorry for himself and plodding about - Bless him...
how old is your puppy? You should not starve a young puppy, it does sound like if is having teethin pains, so if might be finding it hard to chew his food, keep up the good work of ice cubes and teethin toys, poor little chap, keep eye on him, and if any doubt tren take him to the vets, x
sorry just seen that he is 15 weeks old so def should not starve him he too young, if you feeding him complete puppy food then maybe soak and mash it up to a softer texture.
Thanks Gemini05, yes he is on Royal Cainin Junior, which he was put on by my vet about a month ago, but he is not very interested even soaked but I will keep trying. Should I not bother with the chicken and rice??
to make the puppy food more interesting try some boiled breast of chicken or scrambled egg made with puppy formula milk do not use cow milk, or raw fresh beef mince or sardines or mashed up boiled eggs. I also give my teethin puppies a whole raw carrot that i have had in the fridge, i do supervise her when i give her the carrot and they love to nibble on then to ease the pain x
Puppies do suffer pain just like babies teething. They also chew anything and everythink just like a little one and can pick up bugs the same. Don't starve him he is far to young. I have two that love chicken but it gives them the runs, straight through them. Change it to beef. White bones filled with meat are good for teething, keeps them quiet for ages also.
Personally I wouldn't give milk if he has the runs. Plain boiled fish (Carefully remove all the bones), or chicken with some mashed boiled potato or rice. No milk or butter in the potato. not to much all at once split into 3/4 meals a day. When he is solid again then re-introduce small ammounts of the RC. untill back to his normal diet. I suspect it is a bug rather than a foody thing. If it continues for more than 24 hours then a trip to the vet or sooner if he goes downhill fast. Make sure there is no blood in the poo. If he is vomiting and cannot keep anything down then you need the vet now! Make sure he is drinking as he needs fluids. If not then that also is a reason for a vet visit. Hope he is better soon. Aileen
Edited to say I have just noted the date oops!!!!! Any up date on him?
Yes he is fine now, it was definately a 24hr bug and I did exactly what you suggested in your response and he's back to his normal self - Apart from his 4 front teeth missing !!!!
