Hi
I have a deaf staffie who has come from rescue kennels, with his new owners who have just started in my training class for 'adult starters'.  He is lovely happy chap and is picking up command using hand signals nicely.  His owners asked me for some info on vibration collar that are made specifically for deaf dogs to aid their recall training etc.  Has anyone ever used one before and where would one be purchased from.
Just to say, this is not for a static/electric collar before I get shouted at! LOL!
thanks

when my parents got their deaf lurcher we looked into vibration collars, I spoke to a man whos name I cant remember but he wrote the book called "hear hear" which is about training deaf dogs (a great book) and he said really they werent worth it, you are supposed to use them as a clicker therefore instead of click, treat you vibrate, treat.  He said the dog would quite easily ignore the collar if used to get the dogs attention for recall.  He recommended it better to teach the dog to watch you at all times so you can give a hand signal for recall.

Hi

I also have a deaf stafford.  I trainned her on re-call with a vibration collar and she is the best dog I have ever known for re-call.  All the rest of the tranning is done by hand signals.  When she got it right, I would treat her to a bit of liver cake.  She is the best behaved dog you could ever hope for.  Trainning a deaf dog is no hard! it's trainning yourself thats the hard part.  We are all so used to giving vioce commands.  Once you get used to giving hand signals then it's easy.  It helps to get them to watch you all the time.  Just reward your dog every thime it make eye contact with you and it will get the idea soon enough lol.

I bought a cheap vibration collar from e-bay to start with, as I did'nt want to spend loads to find it did not work with her.  It broke after 3 months so I bought a Micro IDT trainning collar.  It's a shock collar which you can turn the shock off completly and just use the vibrate setting.  I've been using mine for over a year and can highly recommend it.

i totally agree vibrating collars arent all that good not that ive ever used one but did take an interest at first .ive got 2 deaf staffis and i usted a haltey and lead could even use a muzzle, then gently kp jolting the lead every 10 or so seconds your dog soon cqatchest on to the command as he will constantly look for you i found it easier to train my deaf dogs in the dark on a field obviously with night lighting ,lol the dogs seem to pay moire attention as its dark.i hope this helps i now walk all three of my dogs off the lead and they are very good with their commands.i found it easier to trane my 2 deaf dogs than i did my bitch that can hear perfectly.donna
