I think I have a cold sore and I've not had one before.

Can anyone recommend a good cream or any good old wives tales?

No kissing for me...................................!

I dab a bit of perfume on mine as it gets rid of them quicker than the stuff you can buy.

The cream's called Zovirax.  It's expensive but effective.

I've never had one, but OH does and he uses Compeed cold sore patches. As others have said the key is to zap it quick.

a dab of Tea Tree oil is the best thing I've found for them.  Works really well. Use it 2 or 3 times a day.

You don't have to fork out for Zovirax any Own Brand Acyclovir will work just as well as that is the ingredient that has been found to be effective on the virus.

Yes...Tesco's own is about half the price of Zovirax and has exactly the same % of Aciclovir.  However, you have to be 100% sure it is a coldsore you have as aciclovir should not be used on some other conditions which can present in a similar manner (like impetigo, for example).

Taking L-Lysine supplements (available from Holland & Barrett and the like) can help prevent/reduce the healing time as well.

Zovirax from Sainsbury's either pump or tube its pricey but works v. quickly, not in the chemist bit but on the shelf.

Zovirax here too, I had the mother of all cold sores come up on Saturday, by Sunday it looked dreadful, today it's almost gone.

Ages ago I had a real run of cold sores and started taking L-Lysine and it literally put an end to the problem.   A while later I was talking to someone who worked for a major pharmaceutical company and he said it was well known that L-Lysine was effective - but it wasn't "marketed" because the stuff was cheap, could not be patented, and so none of the drug companies could make any money selling it.

L-Lysine is to prevent further outbreaks though - not really to treat an existing cold sore.
