Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / The Barf Diet (Dr Ian Billinghurst)

Hello. I have just read thru the barf diet written by dr ian billinghurst. My questions are;
On page 62-63 there is a sample menu.. is this OK to stick to 100% including what supplements to add? (according to the sample menu almost daily salmon oil is added, primrose oil is added once a week, and vitimin E is added every now and then and codliver oil every now and then.. as well as Eggs which are added twice a week)

What supplements do you add and how often do you add them?

I have working dogs who always need energy what supplements or foods do you suggest adding?

I feed a raw diet and do not supplement at all - been feeding it for over 3 years now. I also personally believe that Billinghurst's recommended bone ratio is far too high and I personally feed between 10% and 15%.

If you google BritBarf there is a huge amount of info on that site to help you out with any questions you may have. On joining the group the site owner will send you links to advice for starting to feed  this type of diet.

I just give a good squirt of oil on their dinner once a day, usually at their evening meal. We use Hypercoat, it's a mixture of sunflower, fish and wheatgerm oils. I also give them an egg each 3 or 4 times a week. I don't see the egg as a supplement though, more a way of varying the protein source.

I think the bones would form about 25% of their diet. I've found that too much bone content can cause them to strain and while it's nice to have small firm poos, I don't want them to have problems passing stools.

Hi,

I feed raw and i too do not supplement at all, for the oils mine have a fish meal once a week, pichards, sardines, tuna etc

I feed eggs once or twice a week in the mornings and one morning a week they have a tin of rice pudding each (more of a treat)

They have carcass in the morning either chicken or lamb and then minced meats in the evening: being lamb, tripe, chicken, turkey, organ meat etc.
Mine do have a small amount of working diet kibble in their eveing meal but the bulk of their diet is raw meat and bones and they are all thriving on it with high energy levels :)
