Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / dog put off?
- By welshie [gb] Date 30.04.09 12:55 UTC
the bitch breeder fetched his bitch to my dog , who has sired 6 litters and i think the bitch was to early she is a maiden bitch and on the second visit he wasnt that interested The first time we tried she was really quite unmanagable and really screaming and throwing herself over
Now the bitch owner has gone and done a test and said she is ovulating and should be ready in next 48 hours which now he says today is her 15th day
I  am just hoping that my dog has not been put off by the bitch,s awkwardness could this be possible?

If he has already sired 6 litters then i would imagine he wont worry too much, he will know when the time is right and when it is wild horses probably wouldnt stop him.

Inexperienced males may be put off by a bad experience but i am sure he will be fine :)

I agree, a bit of maidenly reticence when a bitch is not ready won't put off an experienced male at all.

this is the bitches 15th day today and she has been twice this week but dog not that bothered in mateing her he does havbe a couple of half hearted goes but then goes off sniffing around the ground according to bitch owner she has tested with the ovulation pads and they have turned colur and she is now ovulating this happened yesterday she came today same story
could she still be to early ?

I would take the efficacy of nay ovulation testing other than blood progesterone with a pinch of salt.  If there were such reliable simple methods that worked then why would fertility experts still be going for blood testing???

I would listen to your dog.

so do ypu think bitch is to late or to early?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.05.09 17:17 UTC
If it were one of mine I would say too early.

A friend of mine used the ovulation pads.  She took her bitch to the experienced stud dog when they said she was ready but he wasn't interested for another 4 days or so. Going on the dog's estimation she had a successful litter of 8 as a result.

I agree with the others welshie.  The ovulation strips haven't been a success for me, and I have relied on my experienced stud boy, who has told me tonight that my girl is ready!  Bless him, as she is off to an outside stud in the morning!

I wouldn't panic about it being day 15.  I've had bitches mate much later - and have litters no problem.

I had my bitch mated for the first time recently. She was ok for the first mating, although she didn't want to be mated, the dog 'knew' she was ready. The second mating 48 hours later she really did not want to know... I think she had gone over, or more likely already pregnant, but we had pre-mate blood tests done (3 in total) and went on the right day according to the tests. Interestingly enough, my (castrated) male absolutley went up the wall during those 48 hours, I'm amazed he would be affected as extremely as this, but he was the same on her last season.

In my experience, trust the males, their 'noses' are extremely sensitive and know instinctively when its the right time.

so do you know if she,s pregnant yet?

I have a bitch in season, we are using my stud dog.

He is very very interested and try's to mate her she is on about day 13/14.

He normally knows best but i do have another bitch in season at the moment she came in a couple of days earlier than the one i want to mate.

The problem is the bitch tries to attack the dog, and sits down. we have muzzled her and held her but can not get a sucessfull mating.

The dog has sired a litter the bitch is a maiden.

I have spoken to the bitches breeder and she said keep going and trying every day, also said her mother wasn't mated until day 21.

The dog is not being put off by this one single bit!

The one thing is her vulva is not soft as i would like and she is still bleeding. (too early)

Do you think the dog knows best or is being put of the sent by the other bitch being ready to mate??

This is in reply to Fecimus:

The posters who say trust the stud dog, refer to experienced stud dogs. From your post I gather your dog has sired only one litter? This doesn't nesecarilly make him experienced enough to know when the time is right. Some dogs will never say "no thanks", and happily try to mate their bitches whenever they get a chance.
The bitch should definitely not need to be held by force, nor muzzled! It's either not the right day, in which case she's in her right telling him off. OR she's not a bitch that should be mated, due to her lack of breeding ability. Dogs should be able to mate more or less naturally. Sometimes with some gentle encouragement or support from the handler, but never forced. Your bitch might be put off for life, if you try to mate her on the wrong day.
