I was impressed with the free AVG, but to be honest, with all the nasties that are around, I now pay for the full Monty.  The full version of AVG is terrific, and after hearing of others horror stories, I wouldn't change.  Did have Mc Afee years ago, but love AVG, better customer service, even explaining things to a numpty like me, in words that I can understand!

For Malware nasties I use the free Malwarebytes' anti malware as usually its Malware that takes over your system so I tend to run that first then I use Eset for monitoring and auto protection which has been absolutely brilliant upto now.  Does its own auto updating and has kept every threat out over the last 7 mths I've been using it unlike some of the bigger well known brands that cost a lot more too.

I use Avast which is a free download and has regular updates that automatically download. Have used it for a few years now and have been really pleased with it.

Hi their i must say iv spent years using many of the free spyware and virus protection they all worked great for a while but i ended up getting virus's and having lots of problems in the end anyway i finale got sick of it and my friend who's an it tec for a major leading company, told me that nothings realy ever free on the net, i have to admit that the only time i truley never had any problemswas when he gave me a copy of McAfee that lasted a year when it ran out recently i went back to thefree stuff and was straight away plauge with problems and i ended up with a hacker which left my pc unusable,
i had to take my pc to pc world as my friend was away and they cleaned it up and i bought a copy of kaspersky total protection cost £19.99 for the year and i havent had a problem since fingers xx .
if you want to try some free spy/virusware you could try http://download.cnet.com/windows/
or Hippo, good luck hope you find a good one,

We recently experienced PC problems and had to enlist the help of a PC Engineer. Although we already has Norton installed, he recommended using AVG instead, as in his opinion AVG is one of the best products available.

Was that the free AVG or the paid version.  Tried to run a scan last night and it took forever - did not complete.  During the scan nothing else would run.  There is something seriously wrong with my computer - internet explorer does not always open and things freeze.  The last download that I did was to update BBC iplayer software because I missed Ashes to Ashes last week. The problems started before that though.

Sorry not to have replied earlier, but only just switched my laptop on. It was the free version of AVG. The PC Engineer installed it on our three computers and didn't seem to have any problems with the installation on two of the PC's, but he couldn't get it to install on my laptop. I know he removed Norton before he installed the AVG. I didn't really monitor the initial scans he did, but my son says that it took him several attempts before managing to complete a full scan on my son's computer. Unfortunately my laptop was definitely very sick, to the extent that we decided it was not worth repairing and replaced it. I hope you are having more success now, if not good luck.

Yes i got told from someone i know who fixes computers that AVG is the best option, however we have the free one and i am not totally convinced its all that great, so maybe opt for the full version to make sure you are completely protected :)
